In football, the best record automatically wins the championship unless: (a) there is a tie, or (b) there are multiple conferences.

(A) All five schools tied at 2-2, so a tournament was conducted to determine the champion. #5 Union defeated #4 St. Francis 25-7; Union defeated #1 Cortland 18-12; #3 Notre Dame defeated #2 Albany 26-20; Notre Dame defeated Union 25-9.

(B) All six schools finished at either 3-2 or 2-3. A tournament was conducted to determine the champion. #3 St. Cloud State defeated Washington 36-25, #4 Evansville defeated Princeton 21-10, #2 Radford defeated St. Cloud State 26-14, Evansville upset #1 Washington State 12-3, Radford outlasted Evansville 14-13.
