He spent most of his life at Schloss Altenhaus, where he devoted his time to hunt, write, offer parties to the local elite and preside over the community.
In 1760 he married Countess Gabriella von Braen, the last of her family. Through this marriage the Altenhaus family inherited vast estates and works of art. They had children: Alexandra (born 1762), Ferdinand (born 1763), Benedikta (born 1765) and Henriette (born 1768).
He died in 1798.
