The title was created by Emperor [[Demetrius IV of Diadochia]] (r. 1248–1273) to honour his eldest surviving younger brother Isaac Komnenos.

==Ceremonial Costume==

The distinctive colour associated with the title is blue, as such the sebastokratōr′s ceremonial costume includes blue stockings, blue boots, and embroidered golden eagles on their shoes. The Sebastokrator's ceremonial costume also included a red tunic (chlamys) and crown  of red and gold. The sebastokratōr also has the prerogative of signing documents with a special blue ink (his brother the Emperor signs documents with a bright red ink)
