The Hawk Air Defense Network (Priz: Haukkäluftvernä Nettverk) is an air defense network concept designed by Semmens AS of the Prizyetsi Sverd Industries consortium to provide air defense over a large area to cover a wide range of targets ranging from aircraft to missiles and artillery shells, in The United Federation of Prizyetsa's overseas territories. The concept was developed into two models, one static and one mobile, both of which have seen production and deployment.

Background

While the Prizyetsi Armed Forces had several functioning air defense systems in its inventory, it was noticed that lack of communication between radar crews, command units and their batteries caused much confusion and as a result, a slower reaction time. To remedy this, the Prizyetsi government issued a requirement for a way to link all of these systems together and improve efficiency. Semmens AS, a think tank and member of the Sverd Industries consortium offered a report on the nature of air defense in Prizyetsa, and offered to design a whole new air defense network which would remedy many of the issues faced by the previous systems.

To address the issues which reduced the previous air defense equipments' effectiveness, a whole new air defense philosophy was needed. The duty of air defense would no longer be confined to the military, but would have to become a joint effort between civilian air traffic control authorities together with their military counterpart. Direct lines of communication had to be made in order to streamline communication between the two. After this point however, most, if not all, of the work would be done by the military.

The next issue which needed to be addressed was which radar and weapon systems to use. The Prizyetsi Navy already had a number of passive and active air search radar systems in operation. Two systems were chosen, one active and one passive, to be the base military radars as the civilian element of the system would use conventional ATC radars. Deployment

The Haukka ADN system is deployed in a modular fashion. While the radar positions, both static and mobile, are set to cover certain areas, the batteries themselves an be set up in a variety of different ways to cover different areas and protect air space from different types of targets.

The standard set up of the HADN system is made up of several units, as seen below.

Search, Acquisition and Targeting

Command Unit

The Air Defense Command Unit's job is to assign the possible threat to the command which can best respond to the threat. If Either jets can be scrambled to intercept and identify, and possibly destroy the target, via the Air Force Liaison officer, or the target can be given to the ground defense batteries via the Ground Defense Liaison officer.

Radar Systems

APAR + LASeR

The combination of an active phased array system and a conventional radar system allows the HADN system to track, isolate and target threats over long ranges, and gives ground stations a chance to organize before potential threats are within range of their targets. The system is a "light" version of the radar set up used on the Prizyetsi Navy's frigates, destroyers and capital ships, and has proven itself in combat to be quite effective in securing airspace.

  • APAR, (Active Phased Array Radar) is a static directed radar system able to track up to 175 targets simultaneously at up to 150km. This system operates on the X bandwidth.
  • LASeR (Long-Range Air Search Radar), which rotates at a speed of 1,5 rotations per second. Each rotation updates the radar's search results in every direction. This system operates on the L bandwidth.

PPAR

PPAR, or Passive Phased Array Radar, is used to track targets' heading at long ranges, and is more capable of detecting and tracking "stealth" aircraft.

Weapon Systems

SA-10 Missile

The SA-10 "Svelge" (Swallow) is a short range surface to air missile with a range of 50km and an operational ceiling of 25km designed to target, track and shoot down enemy aircraft, missiles and projectiles.

SA-30 Missile

The Sverd SA-30 Missile "Falk" (Falcon) is a medium range surface to air missile designed for area denial and defense against aerial targets, and is the latest development of the medium-ranged part of the Prizyetsi SA family. The SA-30 system is capable of targeting both aircraft and missile systems. With a range of up to 150km at mach 3.4, and an operational ceiling of 100km, the SA-30 system is a flexible part of Prizyetsa's missile defense system.

SA-50 Missile

The Sverd SA-50 Missile "Osspri" (Osprey) surface to air missile is a medium to long range surface to air missile designed to intercept both aircraft and ballistic missiles in it's A and B variants respectively. With a range of 475km and speed of over mach 4, as well as an operational ceiling of 400km, the SA-50 forms the long range bracket of the Prizyetsi missile and air defense program. The SA-50 tracks targets with the aid of the MGRS system, which constantly feeds information to each other via either satellite link or optical transmission. Once the missile is within range of the target, the missile switches over to it's internal guidance systems. The missile system was designed by Sverd Industries and is sold primarily to the Prizyetsi Armed Forces and her allies.
