Formation
The 3rd VS-Panzer Division Totenkopf was constructed soon after the formation of its sister divisions, 1st VS-Panzer Division Kaiser Florian von Horn and 2nd VS-Panzer Division Das Reich. Totenkopf was a part of the original expansion of the Verteidigungsstaffel. Totenkopf was the third Verteidigungsstaffel, and the third armored division, to be formed as part of the expansion.
