The Democratic States of Axdel, commonly known as Axdel, is a nation situated on the western side of the continent Aurora. It is located roughly between 38S-52S latitudinally and between 56E-65E longitudinally on Urth, bordering the nations of Staynes, South Staynes, Emberwood Coast and Quartz Fern Coast. The nation has a temperate environment, dominated by rolling highland and mountain peaks. Axdel itself is divided into seven large states, each represented as a star on the Axdelian Flag. Axdel is a member of the United Nations of the Auroran Continent and was formerly a member of the South East Pacific Coalition.

A relatively young nation, The Democratic States of Axdel formed in 1996 after the collapse of the Republic of Norograd due to a devastating civil war (see Norograd civil war), after which the Axdel coalition gained power and established the nation. From the ancient to medieval era, west Aurora was dominated by the Kormistazic empire, until its capitulation to the Morstaybishlian empire in 1575 after a half-century long crusade into the region.

Axdel has adopted the multinational Kirib(♅) as its currency, like most other Auroran Nations.

History

Prehistory

Archaeological evidence suggests that human nomads originating from lake Lamberta arrived in the region over 49,000 years ago, and were the first humans in the area. The earliest permanent settlement found has been dated to around 7000 BCE and was located on the northern coast, archaeological evidence suggesting they relied on fishing for sustenance. Settlements dating before 4000 BCE have been uncovered all over modern Axdel, and demonstrated knowledge of copper and gold smelting, as evident from metal artefacts found at dig sites from this era.

Ancient Kormistazm

The earliest recorded incidence of Kormistazic culture emerged in 4281BCE, where tribal communities with like-minded philosophy and religion began living in larger settlements. These people believed in an early incarnation of Kozam, a polytheistic religion with cosmic duality of the two major gods, Sek and Noct. Followers were commonly divided into two sects, following either Sek; the god of life and creation, or Noct; the god of reclamation and the afterlife, respectively. The two sects each had coexisting cultures, with the Sek peoples striving for internal peace, bountiful harvest, education, and love, whilst the Noct peoples strove for craft, trade, tradition, and order, though it was not uncommon for worshippers to believe in a mix of the two.

Kormistazic Empire

The peak of the Kormistazm Empire in 732AD

By 532BCE, major Kormistazic cities and settlements coalesced into an empire. This is been shown to have happened after an influential but unnamed priest assembled a council from major settlements declared himself emperor in the name of the gods and their idols. After three short months in power, he was cut down in the streets by a large mob, and a new emperor was violently reinstated. Known as Kayus Hunnes, he made an exodus into the western Zycannes and returned with a rudimentary imperial constitution, gifted upon him via divine inspiration. A council of religious representatives from both sects was assembled as an embodiment of both Sek and Noct's powers combined to rightfully rule over the Kormistazic populace. It was at this time that the revised religious text of Kozam, Kairos, tome of the earth, were published by the prophet Jakatai Kalamitas. The empire first incorporated settlements who worshipped Kozam, before engulfing the entire east peninsular of the Auroran continent and the divided Maltervenian empire over a 500 year conquest. By the 6th century AD, the empire was slowly expanding eastwards, and had significantly advanced technologically. But soon after the empires territorial peak in 732AD, the area now known as Bielarus seceded from the empire, after centuries of neglect from the capital. After a relatively short but decisive conflict, a treaty was decreed and Bielarus became independent from Kormistazm.

After Bielarus' secession, the empire continued westward, encroaching slowly into the loosely incorporated Ethalrian territory, halting in 940AD after a major armed skirmish and subsequent peace agreement. Then came an age of internal harmony and progress for the core Kormistazic territories, no longer busied by expansion and conflict with their neighbours. Great mathematicians and engineers emerged, producing great works of architecture, astronomy, and mathematical theory.

Norograd

main article: Norograd
In 1923 with the rise of socialist ideologies around Urth, the oppressed people of the Kormistazic principality also followed. After a vote, the principality was renamed Norograd in honour of the late Freidrik Noros, an economic professor and socialist philosopher whose work was highly influential among the populace. No communist revolution ever occurred though. However, with the approach of the 1940's, anti-Morstaybishlian sentiment rose, with minor Norogradian freedom groups appearing across the principality. They gained popularity over time, and in the 1950's the first major independence action occurred in Fort Sekan, with the armed confrontation of communist rebels and the city police.

The Norograd civil war

At the dusk of the 1980's, Norograd entered its first stages of decline. Organised protests across the nation demanding national reform became more commonplace, violent, and twisted, occasionally evolving into riots. Worried by these events, Kiet Narvga initiated a scheme to increase national cohesiveness via passive eugenic programs. Such programs were inspired by similar successful implementations in other nations across Urth. The programme was kept out of the public eye, and involved 'diagnosing' undesirable individuals in the population with an obscure disease, and then sterilising them with false medication. Targeted individuals were those that showed association with violent 'freedom fighter' groups, as well as those with chronic genetic disorders and poor mental acuity. The ultimate goal was to make Norograd a cohesive, intelligent, and stable society capable of surviving for centuries, even without a centralised state as Kiet had hoped for future Norograd.

In 1994 however, an as of yet unidentified hacker operating from a public library broke into Norogradian government files referencing the Eugenics program, as well as revealing the existence of bio-warfare divisions and research on engineered bioweapons that was also occouring at the time. Shortly after the breach, the information was leaked to the public, causing an outcry among the freedom fighter groups, many of which were specifically mentioned as targets of the sterilisation program. Occourrence of organised riots spiked across the nation, and within months of the leaks, several organised militias had emerged, most notably the anarcho-communist Norograd Armed Rebels (NAR - not to be confused with the Norograd Armed Resistance terrorist organisation). It was at this time that a coalition of democratic politicians and political philosophers was refounded, known as the Axdel coalition. However, they were overshadowed by the armed militias that had begun amalgamating into the NAR to form a single paramilitary force.

On new years eve 1994, Keit Narvga declared martial law in Norograd, and civilian police patrols were replaced with armed convoys and military units. The NAR had become so entrenched within society that it was as easy to join as it was to apply for a gym membership. In 1995 alone, there were half a dozen assassination of key generals and political figures, notably Darius Finch, Narvga's right hand man since the 60's. Keit himself was targeted many times, albeit all were unsuccessful. Emigration from Norograd spiked as law enforcement became more drastic. Soldiers in city streets could expect to be hailed by gunfire from windows and alleys. Thousands died during this period, with many tens of thousands fleeing the country, primarily to either Emberwood coast or Staynes. At the same time, the Axdel coalition was gaining presence, and was in constant communication with the Staynish government requesting the resources and funds that would be necessary to sway the Norogradian populace over to their cause. Small democratic militias were being recruited to disperse food, medical supplies and water to those who needed them most, and radio stations constantly broadcast messages from the coalition leaders to inform the citizenry of where to find them.

A chemical plant explosion during the height of war

In Spring 1996, another data breach hit Norograd, this time revealing military locations and stockpiles. This breach was unlike the first though, because it went undetected for months, and was orchestrated by the NAR directly. The NAR, using the information retrieved from the hack, plotted a takeover of a 1970's Kilkati military bunker complex used for mass storage of rations and weaponry; exactly what the NAR needed to wage a war against the government. On the 6th of April, the assault on the complex took place, and armed with in-depth knowledge of the facilities security and its flaws, the NAR were successful in capturing it. Military forces attempted to retake the bunker, though were unsuccessful and were driven back from the land surrounding the entrance. From this point on, it was all out war between the NAR and the Governmental forces, with a major offensive being lead against the capital, Andel.

Several months passed, and the campaign into Andel had devolved into guerilla warfare and deep incursions into enemy territory from both sides. However, the NAR seemed to be prevailing, and by late august, the rebel forces had the government forces under siege within the city center. In other cities across the country not heavily involved in the conflict, the Axdel coalition and its Staynish assets began coordinating massive relief and rebuilding efforts, providing food and water to those in need and aiding neighbourhoods. At this point, Kiet Narvga knew he had lost the war. On the first of September and without warning, he managed to smuggle himself out of Andel, and was presumed to have emigrated to Staynes under a new identity. The NAR and governmental remnants promptly declared a cease fire the next day, both sides weighed down by heavy casualties. Now, the freshly formed Axdelian Government asserted control over the capital, beginning cleaning and rebuilding efforts. It declared itself the legal government, which the United Kingdom quickly recognised. soon after, the Axdelian constitution was then decreed, and with it the laws and rights of citizens were lifted from military junta, forming modern-day Axdel, and declaring the end of the civil war on September the 11th 1996. Civil unrest continues to this day, as NAR splinter factions and Norogradian Government supporters stir occasionally, though it has significantly declined over the years. The identity of the hacker that initiated the war and the country from which they originated remains unknown.

Regions and States

Axdel is comprised of seven states, each determined by historical cultural and administrative divisions dating back before the morstaybishlian conquest. The country is also divided into 84 constituencies, independent of state boundaries, which are used to determine representatives in the national assembly. Each constituency is worth 7 representatives, and is comprised of roughly 800,000 citizens, giving 115,000 citizens per representative. They are occasionally altered to reflect changes in population spread.

It consists of the Axdelian army, the Axdelian Navy, the Axdelian air force, and reconnaissance, which is dedicated to military intelligence. Axdel is currently part of a nuclear disarmament treaty with the SCE, Ethalria, and the former Kostov nations, and itself vows to completely abandon nuclear weapons by 2030. The military runs on a 'one step ahead of you' policy, with a relatively large portion of departmental spending being focussed on reconnaissance and deterrence. Military spending accounts for roughly 2% of the nations GDP, or around A♅47bn.
