In verband met de komende verdieping van de vaargeul van de nabijgelegen Westerschelde (links) moet er volgens de Europese habitatrichtlijn natuurcompensatie komen. Door de polder en de Belgische Prosperpolder, aan de andere kant van de grens (gemarkeerd door de dunne lijn bomen) te ontpolderen wordt er grond terug gegeven aan de natuur, zogenaamde natuurcompensatie (advies commissie onder leiding van Ed Nijpels). De maatregelen zijn omstreden, in het Belgisch deel van het gebied is men reeds begonnen..Hertogin Hedwigepolder with Drowned Land of Saeftinghe in the foreground, nuclear plant Doel (Belgium) at the horizon. Because of the future enlargement of the fairway of the nearby Westerschelde (on the left) , the nature has to be compensated (according to the European Habitats Directive). The Hertogin Hedwige polder (and the adjacent Belgian polder - on the other side of the border - the Prosperpolder) are to be given back to nature, i.e. are to be 'de-polderd'.
