In 1897 he married Julie Darby, only child and heiress of a rich Arenlander industrialist. They had seven children: Anne Pauline (born 1898), Henri (born 1899), Victor (born 1901), Clotilde (born 1903; nun), Emma (1905-1906), Hélie (born 1907; childless) and Emmanuel (born 1914).

The couple settled in Halvan, where Gerhard purchased a very large estate called Moulinjaune, which remains in the family until today.
