The Handball World Cup is a major international competition in the sport of handball. It is currently administered by the Handball World Cup Federation.
The former nation of Cockbill Street were the inaugurators of the competition, which as of January 2016 in in its fifteenth edition.
At the end of the 16th edition, 10 different nations have won the World Cup.
It has been hosted in 12 different nations.
Costa de Oura won the latest edition to claim their third consecutive title.
Format
The format of the tournament varies depending on the hosts. However, the tournament generally has a group stage followed by a knock-out stage.
Abandonned World Cups
Between the end of World Cup IV held in NEWI Cefn Druids and World Cup VII held in Sarzonia, there were three failed attempts to hold World Cups. The first, so-called "World Cup V" was scrapped due to no nation coming forward to host the tournament. The so-called "World Cup VI" (considered here as the official 5th edition of the World Cup) was held in Hockey Canada but was abandoned after just four matchdays due to internal troubles. The official World Cup 6, known as "World Cup of Handball, was held in Miroxia, but was also abandoned after just two matchdays, also due to domestic issues.
