Holler Folk

Holler Folk, also known as Mountain People, Hillbillies, and Ridgers, are a recognized ethnic group in Appalachia. They represent a long line of multi-generational small communities located up a holler or hollow (road up a narrow valley with clusters of homes) that have existed, mostly unchanged, from the time the area was in the United States, throughout The Great War, and into modern times.

The highest proportion of Holler Folk exists in the historical areas of West Virginia, eastern Kentucky, eastern Tennessee, and western Virginia. They also extend north into Pennsylvania where clusters exist in the Blue Ridges.
