Laiatanese republic referendum, 1887
A referendum on creating a republic was held in the Laiatanese Empire on March 9, 1887. After the collapse and overthrow of the military junta, the issue of the form of government remained unsolved. Anger towards Yuri IV, the Laiatanese monarch, for his role in allowing the junta to rise resulted in a vote to completely scrap the monarchy that had ruled Laiatan since 1154 and establish a new form of government. Yuri IV was banned from any campaigning in the referendum by the provisional government. The proposal was approved overwhelmingly by 74.6% of voters with a turnout of 78.8%.

Results
On the day of the referendum, the electorate voted categorically in favor of republic. The results were unsurprising to most in the political realm, as widespread protests and rallies against the former emperor occurred in the weeks before the vote. Scholars today speculate that Laiatan would have restored Yuri IV to the throne had he made efforts to halt the coup.
