There have been fourteen monarchs of Autelia since the monarchy's inception in 1698. Of the fourteen, ten monarchs have been Kings and four monarchs have been Queens regnant.

With the original ruling house being the House of Caumartin, the ruling house has changed over the years: firstly in 1779, the House of Guidry began its reign with the accession of Alexandre III, the son of Queen Henriette and her consort, Count Louis de Guidry; secondly in 1901, the current ruling house, the House of Astier began its tenure with the accession of Édouard III, the son of Queen Christiane and her consort Pierre d'Astier. In 1980, Queen Emma issued a royal decree which stated that the House of Astier would remain the Royal House upon her son's accession, and it would not move to the House of Montseurat. Prince Alexandre accepted this decision originally, however he was reportedly against it towards the end of his life. The house is expected to change again to Württemberg when Crown Prince Aurélien ascends the throne, as the son of Queen Elisabeth and her consort Prince Joachim of Württemberg. No official announcement has yet been made as to whether this will not be the case.

There have only been two cases of abdication in the history of the monarchy. Firstly, Queen Henriette announced her abdication in 1779, after a reign of thirty-three years, citing her old age and ailing health. She passed the throne to her son the same year and managed to survive another forty years, taking the title and style of Her Royal Highness Princess Henriette The Princess Royal. The second case occurred when Queen Emma announced her abdication in 2012, after a reign of thirty-two years. She had been suffering from a terminal cancer and had decided to abdicate before her health worsened further. Her son succeeded her the following year, and she passed away a few months later. She also decided to take the title of Princess Royal, following Henriette's precedent.
