Military of Free Syllvin
This page is a work in progress by its author(s) and should not be considered final. |
The Department of The Four Stars is the military arm of the government of Free Syllvin. It encompasses the officers of the Councilors on National Defense, Interior Security, Military Logistics, and Foreign Associations. Most wartime operations are overseen by the Councilor on National Defense, though each individual has complete authority over their associated organizations. The department is separated into the Internal and External Defense Forces, as well as the Syllvan Logistics Division and the Diplomatic Security Corps. Because Free Syllvin does not have a centralized intelligence organization, federal investigations department, border control service, homeland security group, or national police departments, but instead has all such services consolidated under the Department of The Four Stars, the personnel and budget of the Department is greater than that of a standard military. The standard of technology in the Department is higher than the rest of Free Syllvin; recent downsizing and budget allocations have given Military Logistics much more funds for R&D. One of the major suppliers for the Department's equipment, Future Solutions, is considered the most advanced research firm on Gondwana.

Small Arms and Equipment
The Department branches have access to a wide range of weaponry and tools thanks to the massive arms industry that exists in Free Syllvin. However, only the most advanced and cutting edge technology is slated for complete use and adoption. The IDF uses equipment that conforms to the global standard, making it easier to manufacture and distrubute to such a large organization. The EDF and N-STAC, on the other hand, use equipment that is more on par with nations such as Emberwood Coast. While more costly and having a far smaller capacity for usage, this equipment gives Free Syllvin an edge over competitors in the foreign field.
Firearms
Free Syllvin maintains a small pool of weapons that each branch of service can draw upon. The Department of Military Logistics ensures that there is always sufficient ammunition, and that the selection of firearms is adequate enough to address all possible situations a soldier may encounter in the line of duty. Thanks to the large number of weapons sold through corporations such as Dirt Cheap, Ltd. the Department of the Four Stars can easily acquire new or specialized weapons if the need arises.
Infantry Equipment
The EDF and IDF share a base set of fatigues. The EDF version is primarily dull-green and brown, while the IDF-issue uniform is deep blue. The standard issue BDU consists of a heavy nylon-cotton blend fabric, with small polyethylene/foam armor plates inserted into the outer arm and thigh areas. The fabric is 90% waterproof and is designed to breathe well in all environments. This is cinched with a cotton-web utility belt that has three-to-six storage attachments and a sidearm holster. The pants legs end in spats which are worn over a set of waterproof faux-leather boots with polyfoam armor inserts. Elbow and knee guards are constructed from PVC and light alloys, and have a shock-resistant brace and a layer of EVA foam underneath. The gloves are waterproof, made of synthetic suede, and have a kelvar layer over the back of the palm.
The helmet is a kevlar-lined composite shell with impact webbing and foam cushions to help reduce blunt force trauma and ballistics impacts. It has three modular mounting points - two on the sides, one on the back - to allow communications equipment, night vision, and other devices to be mounted to the helmet. Many models use a detachable sloped armor piece over the forehead, which has the individuals serial number and rank in a light-reflective matrix barcode. This armor plate also is mounted with a pair of flip-down eye protectors.
On top of the fatigues is a plate carrier with straps for three utility pockets. The vest holds eleven armor plates, five back, four front, two side, which are constructed of military-grade ceramic and packed with a proprietary high-density plastic. These plates are further cushioned by a layer of impact foam. The vest has a cushioned foam high-collar that tucks into the helmet. This protects the wearer from flying debris, flames, and inclement weather. Webbing slots in the vest allow for two shoulder guards to be worn on top. These are composed of a three-layer polyethylene-foam composite shoulder guard, which is mounted on top of a kevlar-woven armor plate sheathe. The left shoulder has a stamp of the EDF or IDF sigil and the unit of the individual, while the right is stamped with their serial barcode. Due to the weight of this equipment, it is only worn during riots or combat deployments.
On top of all of this equipment, personnel also are permitted to wear the traditional Syllvan peram, a colored stole-like scarf that is used for denoting cultural, familial, and occupational history.
The dress uniform for the Department of Four Stars is universal, used by all members of all divisions of each of the 4 departments. The male version consists of a navy-blue double-breasted overcoat with traditional half-skirt coattails. This coat is trimmed with silver polyester, and has several interior pockets for storage. A zip pocket is located on the right breast, directly above the clip for the yellow aiguillette that connect to the uniform epaulets. The epalets are golden-striped, but do not display rank for those under major. Instead, rank insignia are pinned to a specially-designed slot on the high collar of the jacket. On the left breast, there is a small strip of stainless steel used as an anchor for any medals or accolades a soldier may collect during his service. Following the jacket is a simple white button-up and a pair of white suede gloves. These gloves have the insignia of the soldier's division stiched onto the back in red fabric. This is one of the only instances the color red is used in the Department of Four Stars.
All soldiers are issued a beret, which is a lighter blue. It is trimmed with black felt and has a golden star pin affixed to the front. The pants are the same shade and material as the jacket. They are light and voluminous, having two deep pockets on either leg. The black leather belt is built-in, and clasps at the front with a thick silver clamp. The belt has several clasps for pouches and weapons, though it is taught in training to use the jacket storage instead. The pants tuck into the knee-high dress boots. The boots are designed to be worn in all weather conditions and are made of specially-treated synthetic leather. Finishing off the ensemble is a pair of black spats that keep the pants legs tucked in.
The female version of the uniform is almost identical to the male version. The only differences are the smaller breast-flap on the jacket, a higher waist on the pants, and shorter boots. While females are given the option of having a skirt instead of pants, most opt to keep the uniform as it comes.
Officers are issued a black beret with a silver star pin, as well as a black trench-coat, to separate them from a distance during events. Their uniforms are also a shade lighter than the enlisted version. Besides that, the rank insignia are displayed on the epaulets as well as the collar.
Internal Defense Force
The Internal Defense Force, or IDF, is the federal paramilitary police of Free Syllvin. It is the largest of the four departments due to the multiple duties it has to fulfill. It reports to the Councilor on Interior Security and operated under two Sector Commanders and a Commissioner for each Territory. The IDF does not traditionally operate as a military organization, however, in times of war, it mobilizes and becomes the first and last line of defense for the sovereign territory of Free Syllvin. As a form of gendarmerie, IDF personnel investigate criminal activity and perform standard law enforcement operations around the nation. They have the advantages of being completely authorized to kill or otherwise harm if the need calls for it, and are able to source important investigations to a nation-wide network without any cross-facility or bureaucratic red tape that may hinder other police forces. Some particular duties of the IDF include patrol of the EEZ and local waters, manning the border defense stations in Polmor, and serving as riot control officers. The largest difference between the IDF and EDF is that personnel are mostly not split up into units based upon their branch of service. Rather, the Corps an officer is a member of denotes their specialty and duties. The nature of the IDF as peacekeepers and law enforcers necessitates that operating bases and offices be staffed by personnel from all branches, and it is easier to maintain when all officers are serving in 'co-ed' environments.
The IDF chain of command is divided up by territory. Councilor on Interior Security Jenae Benia maintains overall authority over the IDF jurisdictions. The two major jurisdictions are the Confederacy and Syllvania, which are administrated by a Sector Commander in charge of overall policy and unit deployment; currently the Sector Commander of Syllvania is Calgar Rist, while the Commander of Syllvania is Gentus Dore. Beneath them are Territorial Commissioners, one for each territory. These Commissioners are usually based out of the capitol, or otherwise largest, city in the territory. They are responsible for making sure that each Law Office in their area, be it the central headquarters for a regional city or a five-man post in the rural towns, performs to regulations and is issued the necessary items to complete tasks. These offices are ran by whichever officer holds the highest rank, and they are given the title of Directór, interchangeable with both Director and Chief in Codexian.
Sentry Corps
The Sentry Corps is the largest single division of the Department in terms on manpower. It is essential to the function of the state; it is a federal law enforcement and criminal investigations department that has completely supplanted local-level police throughout Free Syllvin. Sentry Corps Officers are known informally as Law Officers, though some colloquial names include las botas, arándanos, and go-gos. The primary duties of the Sentry Corps are keeping the peace, pursuing and capturing criminals and other fugitives, preventing corruption of public officials, aiding the public in times of crisis, and enforcing the Syllvan Articles of Confederation. The Cyber-Sentry Division is a special sub-section of the Corps, whose officers are specially trained in digital warfare, counter intrusion, encryption, and other technical skills. They exclusively deal with crimes such as fraud, identity theft, money laundering, and DOS attacks. In war-time, the Sentry Corps transitions with the rest of the IDF into what Free Syllvan counts as its National Guard. They possess the largest numbers of armored vehicles out of any branch of service, and while most are only used in the defense of the nation, Sentry Corps units drill in infantry and armored warfare tactics five times annually to ensure they are prepared.
Vehicles
The Sentry Corps employs dozens of vehicles in the line of service, though in the interest of keeping this information strictly military-related only vehicles that fit that descriptor will be listed.

Sailing Corps
The Sailing Corps of the Internal Defense Force is the naval division that handles domestic police duties. They are a magnitude larger than the Nautical Defense Corps of the EDF, but their equipment is geared towards smaller and less combat-oriented duties.
The primary responsibilities of the Sailing Corps include patrolling the waters of the Syllvan Gulf and Lake Cirrel for black market activity and exploitation of natural resources. They are often assigned in small groups to oil platforms, to supervise and protect their operations. Riverine patrols are common in northern Polmor to screen against intrusion from the Daccic Republic. Search and Rescue is also one of the duties they perform. The majority of Sailing Corps forces, however, conduct border patrol and escort duties within and without the Syllvan EEZ.
Ships
The Sailing Corps maintains few ships-of-the-line, instead focusing their strengths into patrol craft. They also possess two minelayers to create defensive lines into the Syllvan Gulf.

Air Corps
The Air Corps is an extremely flexible division of the IDF, simultaneously combining the many duties of law enforcement, defense, public safety, and surveillance. Pilots work closely with both the Sentry Corps and Sailing Corps for transport duties and during combat maneuvers. Most of the day-to-day duties of the Air Corps involve airlifting vehicles, cargo, or personnel between locations, running combat air patrols and generally policing Free Syllvin's airspace, providing over-watch on criminal pursuits and traffic incidents, and performing meteorological research. Helicopter pilots are also called into service for fire fighting, search-and-rescue, and ambulance duties.
Aircraft
The Air Corps maintains a limited variety fleet to keep maintenance costs low. The combat wings have no air superiority fighters, instead using interceptors and ground attack craft only.
External Defense Force
The External Defense Forces, or EDf, is the organization that defends the borders and foreign interests of Free Syllvin. They are a compartmentalized force, having multiple units specialized for certain tasks. While the IDF uses force of numbers to engage hostile elements, the EDF is centered around technologically advanced equipment and overlapping fields of support. They eschew strength of numbers for fewer, better quality forces. EDF personnel in the Nautical Defense division patrol the shipping lanes around Syllvan territory, man the national defense grid in the central territories, and operate as a border guard in the lines of fortifications that separate the Daccic Republic from Free Syllvin. A special sub-group, the EDF Rangers, are the elite infantry unit of the EDF Ground Assault Corps and are deployed alongside many N-STAC teams.

Nautical Defense Corps
The Nautical Defense Corps is the naval arm of the External Defense Force and is the largest branch of the traditional Syllvanian armed forces. They specialize in amphibious assault, and operate the only military oil platforms on Urth. Their duties include intercepting hostile invasion fleets, transport of infantry and armored forces to foreign combat areas, and patrolling the sea trade lanes outside Free Syllvin's EEZ.

National Special Tactics and Coordination Office
Free Syllvin maintains divisions of Special Forces for each branch of the EDF, which operate under the National Special Tactics and Coordination Office, or N-STAC. Deployed on missions of high risk and of extreme importance to national security, most operations undertaken by N-STAC and its predecessors remain classified due to, quote," questionable ethical and moral standards involved with securing continued sovereignty."
The Strategic Armored Operations Command, better known as the Raider Squadron, is the special operations wing of the Ground Assault Corps. Specializing in lightning-fast assaults, suppression of hostile advances, and retrieval missions, the Raider Squadron is the EDF's premier heavy combat unit. They rely on armored units and vehicles, maintaining a dedicated fleet of tanks, IFVs, and light transports. Operatives are deployed in sections of 45 infantry, 3 tank crews, and 2 pairs of IFVs. There are 20 such units within the squadron. The Raider Squadron primarily works in concert with standard Ranger forces in the field, and rarely are assigned to operations alongside another N-STAC group. Their loud approach methods and typically brash personalities prevent them from working effectively with soldiers who are not also members of the Sentry Corps.
The Naval Expeditionary Assault and Reconnaissance Group, known shorthand as NEXA/RG or Storm Team, is the EDF's resident black-ops unit, operating from the Nautical Defense Corps. Storm Team members are experts at infiltration, counter-terrorism, controlled sabotage, and underwater demolitions missions. More of their operations are classified than any other N-STAC jurisdiction, and they are considered the most effective of the five. When not undertaking assignments of national security, sections of NEXA/RG may be assigned to assist in diplomatic missions for increased security, train the soldiers or special forces of allied nations, and perform deep-cover espionage. When on official duty, Storm Team members can be recognized by their full-body composite blast armor. In practice, such a recognizable uniform is left behind when the mission calls for anonymity.
The Specialized Situation Response Division, commonly referred to as S3D or the Angel Wing, is a collection of the best combat pilots in the Aviation Corps. Aviation aces are the core of this team, serving as air cover for heavy offensive and defensive actions, interception, and precision target elimination. Other groups in the S3D are specialized for high-altitude surveillance, reconnaissance, and strategic bombing.
The Network Security Commission are teams of skilled hackers and analysts that serve as an electronic deterrent against attacks to the Syllvan network. The NSC also manages overwatch on N-STAC operations, usually with Storm Team. They rarely operate in the field, preferring to use the Tech Corps' 188th Direct Intervention Battalion as proxies when they are required to work in concert with another N-STAC branch.
The Experimental Weapons Technology Applications Section is the heavy demolition, shock-and-awe, extended siege unit of N-STAC, known as ExWeapTech, or informally, Blast Squad. Instantly iconic in their heavy plated EOD suits, ExWeapTech is home to the R&D and testing wings of the special forces divisions. New equipment becomes invariably tested in the field by these units, usually on enemy fortifications. As Engineering Corps soldiers are wont to do, ExWeapTech operatives will equip themselves with a wide array of gadgets to augment their combat effectiveness. If Free Syllvin needs a gate breached or a wall held, it is a sure thing to find Blast Squad on the job.
Aviation
The Syllvan air services focus primarily on supporting ground units, and there is a higher propensity for specialized ground attack aircraft than there is air superiority.

Diplomatic Security Corps
The Diplomatic Security Corps of Free Syllvin is an international organization headed by the Councilor on Diplomatic Association. While some would say the Councilor's title is a misnomer seeing as he is in charge of a security and intelligence agency, managing the DSC is only part of his job. Currently, Darius Lourne holds the position by special appointment. Because the territory of Firkon is designated a nature preserve, there isn't a permanent population to elect a Councilor. Therefore, Lourne has purchased a plot of land on the island that makes him a de-jure resident of the territory. Said land is used as a butterfly sanctuary and has a seasonal roster of groundskeepers.
The DCS handles all logistical, security, and maintenance of embassies, foreign aid, and international shipping operations under government purview. Its operatives are tasked with the protection and service of ambassadorial staff and negotiators wherever they are dispatched by Free Syllvin. Security details at all Syllvan embassies are managed by the DSC, as well as the personal well-being of political figures and locations at home. Because their duties are not strictly military in nature, the Corps does not maintain a large inventory of weapons or vehicles. Most of their stock is strictly transport, though they do have several hundred armored cars and helicopters for operations in volatile or remote areas of the world.
There is a subsection of the DSC that, while answerable to the Councilor, actually serve the entirety of the Conclave as ceremonial guards. In Avannian, they are known as Prenkepz Maeltas. This has a multitude of meanings in different languages due to the cultural knowledge and history associated with the position, which originated in the monarchy days of Free Syllvin. In Codexian, they are known as "Kingsmen." Dressed in an outfit that recalls the historical warriors of the Syllvan Isles, the Kingsmen wear their weapons openly, like the rest of the DSC.
