Etymology

The name of the Kingdom of Arendelle is derived from its Old Norse version of Arendahl. Aren is version of the Hebrew name Aaron which means "strong one, eagle, strong tower, summit, mountain, or fortress." Dahl is a Norse variant of the Old English word Delle which means "valley." In other words, Arendelle is defined as either meaning "fortified/strong valley", Aaron's Valley, or the "eagle's valley."

History

First Inhabitants

The first human settlement in Arendelle is the Ahrensburg culture (11th to 10th Millennia BC). The culture was named after one of their villages named Ahrensburg that was discovered in southern Corona. Early artifacts discovered were stone weapons, arrowheads, and lances which were used in hunting. Another Germanic culture that migrated over in 3000 BC was the Augandzi, who named the surrounding region "Agder." In 2500 BC, bronze was discovered by the tribes living around Arendelle. There was little bartering of goods or such that happened in Arendelle due to the lack of riches but many chieftains hoarded weapons and were known for being buried in huge burial mounds. Little is known about this time up until AD 200 when Roman burial urns and goods were being found, showing that some tribes had established trade with Britons or Gauls.

Unification Age

After the destruction of the Roman Empire in AD 500 at the hand of the German tribes, large amounts of Roman spoil could be found all over Germania, including in Arendelle. Also, the erection of stone villages was now seen as was the creation of walled fortresses and palisades. Small communities could know be traced as well as small villages and communities began to unify for protection. By AD 700, evidence of small councils was available but it was in the largest town, named Arendahl, that in around 872, a king was crowned over the new little kingdom. According to tradition, the first king was named Olaf I. After unification, we see the erection of more fortifications around Arendelle and the increasing size of the town as well.

Viking Age

After the rise of Arendelle, a massive trade expansion burst out, with the rise of seafarers known as Vikings. Arendellian Vikings joined the ranks of many other Nordic ones to raid Germanian settlements and coastal settlements all along the West Coast of Norup, something the Germanians did not tolerate and it resulted in a seawar between many of the Nordic and German nations. However, while trading and plundering the coasts of Norup, Christianity began to slowly spread to the Vikings, causing it to percolate back home and effect the Norse tribes. Around AD 1000, the first Christian Church was erected in Arendelle after King Harold I converted to Christianity.

The Dark Ages

For the next 200 years, Arendelle prospered through increased trade of ice, timber, and fish. However, 1349, the Black Plague struck Arendelle and roughly 71% of the population died during the onslaught, including many members of the royal family, including King Olaf III at the time. Arendelle skyrocketing economy collapsed as ice harvesting ceased, farming came to a standstill, and lumbermills halted. Even after the plague passed, it took 100 years for Arendelle to get back on its feet again due to its small population size and the small outbreaks of Black Plague that continued to erupt ever couple of years. In 1528, Protestantism spread from Germania to Arendelle and in 1531, the Church was officially changed to Lutheranism.

Golden Age of Arendelle

By 1750, Arendelle has resumed its status as a powerful regional trading kingdom and with the creation of more ports, its trade only increased. Up until the 1840s, Arendelle continued to increase in trade size and stature, becoming the chief importer for ice and textiles. However, a small brief period of isolation was ushered in for 10 years around the 1840s under the reign of King Adgar but after his death, trade resumed as usual. A brief altercation erupted between the Duchy of Weselton and Arendelle in 1845 when their duke tried to assasinate the monarch. At the same time, another failed assassination attempt from the Southern Isles resulted in heavy trade restrictions against the Southern Isles and Weselton, causing a decline in Arendelle's trade. Another development erupted later in 1850 when King Adrek of Ashram launched an assassination attempt against the queen as well. However, relations between Ashram were repaired soon after.

Brazilian Invasion, Subjugation, and Independence

In 1865, Brazilian troops attacked Arendelle and after a 8 month-long campaign, they successfully invaded Arendelle and turned it into a constituent kingdom. However, being forced to sign a trade deal, they reinstated Queen Elsa as the monarch and established it as the United Kingdom of Arendelle, Weselton, and the Southern Isles. A dispute soon broke out over Corona, a Germanic kingdom that was allied with Arendelle. The Brazilians launched a successful invasion of Corona only to get involved in a conflict over who would administrate it. The Roman Republic claimed it but Arendelle sent local troops over to occupy it. With that, the Prime Minister of Arendelle also opened its doors to free trade and allowed American refugees to establish themselves in the North Mountain region. In 1872, the Brazilian Empire collapsed and a Cold War soon erupted between Arendelle and the Roman Republic through a proxy war while Arendelle encouraged piracy and rebellion in the Roman Republic. After the Roman Republic destroyed Ashram, Arendelle launched a military campaign against the Roman Republic, freeing most of the Germanic regions.

Industrial Revolution and Progressive Era

Unlike many other nations, Arendelle did not join the race of imperialism but spent most of its time building up a military and its economy. Arendelle still remained a chief textile importer but the discovery of gold in Arendelle in 1880 fueled a massive gold rush that settled most of the North Mountain region and increased their wealth. Arendelle industrialized heavily as well, although the progress was a lot greater in the North Mountain region than in the town of Arendelle, also called "Arendelle Proper." In 1904, there was a push for the creation of a constitutional monarchy but the idea was crushed due to lack of support in the Arendelle Proper. However, revolutions in the North Mountain led to the allowance of women to vote and the implementation of more liberal policies.

Second and Third Norupean Wars

In the Second Norupean War, Arendelle remained primarily neutral but they did give limited military supplies and support to Corona and Westphalia during the second half of the war. After the war ended, Arendelle invested heavily in helping rebuild Norup but was unable to stop the Great Depression that hit most of Norup and effected even Arendelle. When World War III erupted, Arendelle proclaimed neutrality but in 1940, Tomainian troops invaded Arendelle and subjugated them. However, for 2 years, they tried to capture the North Mountain but everytime, they were repelled. However, by 1946, the Tomainian regime collapsed under both Weseltonian, Westphalian, and Caucasian Rus assault as well as a coup removing the evil Adeloid Hynkel from power, and the proclamation of a democracy. In 1948, revolution in Fascist Bacteria ended the war for good.

Post Norupean War III

After the end of World War III, Arendelle began to slowly rebuild from the devastation caused by the war. For the next 50 years, Arendelle had to slowly recover while trying to keep up with international events. In 1985, Arendelle's economy has recovered enough to where they had entered back onto the world stage as a player. In 2014, Arendelle joined the [Congress of Nations] and in July of 2014, they became one of the five members of the Norupean Union
