The Benevolent Meritocracy of Dovahofkiin, commonly referred to as simply Dovahofkiin and occasionally Dova, is a magocratic meritocracy composed of twelve identified and charted islands, one being Dovahofkiin Proper, which is situated above the continental landmass of Atlantia. In fact, compared to Atlantia, it is large enough to be considered a subcontinent by some. Although Dovahofkiin is an island nation with no land borders, it is in close nautical proximity to the Atlae Isles and its accompanying failed states (Charton, Kerlington, Minedestives, and Liber Yorvus), Toksun Ance, and Celestia.
The number of Dovahofkeen citizens is not publicly known, yet the estimated population is about seven million. Most of these people are either farmers or nomads, with a relatively small group of people living in major cities across the landmass. Yet, again, exact demographics are not known. The capital of Djuptvattenpåbankerna Rätt (generally called Bankerna by foreigners) and surrounding areas make up the largest metropolitan area on the island, although the exact number residents is up for debate. It is considered to have less than half a million people, but some claim otherwise. Other major cities include Drakoe, the seat of the government, and Mänsklig Punkt.
The Meritocracy has a deep and enchanted history, literally speaking. It is widely known that Dovahofkiin is the home of a massive dragon population. It is one of the only places on the Urth that holds this race of animals. Dragonia is also known for its dragon-like species, yet Dova is said to have a much larger residency of the beasts. Not only that, much of the culture of Dovahofkiin is centered around the mystical creature, and it is said that, on occasion, dragons play a role in the international and internal decisions of the policymakers in the capital. Little is known about how the dragon population came to be, but many claim that the aliens that treated Urth as a wildlife preserve in the early days of history had something to do with it.
Present-day Dovahofkiin is known for its frozen climate and its stillness. It rarely takes any part in the doings of others, except when it involves its own well-being. Dova attempts to keep ties with the other sovereigns of the Atlantian continent, yet misses out on the opportunities that are held in other divisions of the world. Dragons are known to attack and even kill wrongdoers, so tourists are considerably less likely to want to settle down in the nation.
ETYMOLOGY
The term "Dovahokiin" is completely unheard of within the country itself. The natives call their land the Smältlandaveldochrök. However, due to the uncertain pronunciations that non-natives give the name, external nations prefer to keep "Dovahofkiin" as a safe word for the frigid land.
LANGUAGE
Dovahofkiin is a strange place when it comes to language. The country has adopted the Swedish language as a go-to speak for nearly everyone in the nation, and it works well, for the most part. Since the spread of Codexian throughout the Urth, however, Dovas have had to keep up with the times. Therefore, many people taking part in the tourism industry have to make sure they speak the almost-universal tongue. Not only that, Latin has taken hold of the population. Since the nearby nations of Tretrid, the Atlae Isles, and Mexregiona all have major influences dealing with the speak, Dovahofkiin can use it to show companionship and understanding with the peoples of these nations. And, finally, the infamous tongue of the Dragon Council. The people held in the Caverns of Drakoe, who make most of the decisions regarding nearly everything, speak a dialect of Swedish, Latin, and the languages lost in time that is so harshly heavy that translators have to deliberate over the message many times over before they can verify news to the public. This has caused minor problems in the past, most of them dealing with miscommunication. The language is extremely sacred to both the people of the Caverns and the Dovahofkeen citizens, though, so it has stayed alive and thriving to this day.
VEXILLOLOGY
The Flag of Dovahofkiin depicts a black dragon wielding an orb of some sort on a black field. The orb itself is centered on the banner and is considered an important piece of the work. This design was thought up of in the original congregations of the Dragon Council, and it has stuck ever since. It is thought to be unlucky to stare at the flag for too long, as the dragon straddling the flag is deeply sacred. It is officially unnamed by the government of the nation, but many speculate that the beast's name is the inspiration for the naming of Dovahofkiin itself. The orb is seen to represent the power and majesty of the dragon, a power that is pure and bright. Perhaps the serpentine leads the nation in all times, good and bad. Or perhaps it means nothing, simply a drawing of a bogus lizard that was last seen in Loch Ness. It is truly your decision.
