Delegate of The Pacific

Francos Spain, also known in his time as El Caudillo, was arguably the most famous nation to ever play the game. Seen as tyrannical by some and a great saviour by others, as Delegate of the Pacific he and Poskrebyshev held the oldest feeder in NationStates for over a year.

History

Francos Spain was purportedly introduced to NationStates by Poskrebyshev, a friend of his from class, circa early 2003. He first made his name in user-created regions, founding the regions of Spain and Ukraine. Three weeks before the end of August 2003, he and Poskrebyshev moved to the Pacific, and by the end of August they had laid plans for a coup d’etat. On 28 August 2003 at 4 AM, Francos Spain, together with his co-revolutionaries, suddenly seized the delegacy of the Pacific Region and quickly moved to establish his power. He ejected anyone affiliated with the old administration of Thedoc and The Savage Lands as well as anyone who had a certain number of endorsements, reaching 295 ejections. This raised the ire of the old regime’s Pacific Army and drew the attention of many powers around the NS world, who had previously been focused on the “Great Villain” of the day, the Farker 1 Infinite Loop. The Alliance Defense Network (ADN) stirred to life and allied with the Pacific Army. They collected themselves and attempted to create a counter-revolution to spur Thedoc back to power. On September 1, 2003 — a few days into the revolution — Francos Spain announced the foundation of the New Pacific Order.

The further history of Francos Spain is largely detailed in the article on the Pacific region.

He made his last post on the Pacific forums on 27 May 2004, entered the North Pacific on 10 July, ceased all activity on 14 July (the “Day of the Fallen Comrade”), was ejected to the Rejected Realms on 28 July, and finally CTE’d on 13 September. His last known words in NationStates were to RedCommunist: “All right. Talk with you later.” Many players, including some of his old enemies like Crazy girl, asked the mods that he be moved back to the Pacific to die, but despite some sympathy it was not to be; technical reasons were cited against it. BlackAdder goes Forth, Chosen Men, and Sixguns instead went to the Rejected Realms to hold a vigil for Franco as he faded. Franco’s old friend Poskrebyshev CTE’d at almost the same time. Rumors of unclear origin emerged that Franco had committed suicide in real life.

These rumors later proved to be untrue, as Francos Spain publicly returned for a single day on the tenth anniversary of his August Revolution. A WA resolution to commend him was put forth at the same time by A mean old man but failed to garner sufficient support to pass, his controversy following him even a decade later.

Quotes from contemporaries

  • Thel DRan: If just 1% of what was said about Francos was true, then here’s what I know about him:
Francos Spain was a remarkably intelligent and dedicated man. He possessed the courage and strength of character to define an approach to our common activity and, further, to serve as a leader with few equals. His talents for organization and communication were worthy of note — as was the genuine spirit of compassion he demonstrated to those who bothered to take time to know and communicate with him. Lastly, though somewhat private, he was certainly a man who felt and thought deeply. In short, he kicked ass — thoroughly and often.
  • Caesar: As a Delegate he was mediocre at best
  • The twoslit experiment: I bear him ill will in real life.
His behavior toward human beings is cruel.
I may be many things to cruel selfish people, but tolerant is not one of them.
  • Winnipeg: Fairwell Francos Spain, while many of us Disagreed with your RP Character, and your Policies, we can all Agree that you helped make the game more enjoyable and gave many something to work towards. Tonight I hold a Cold one High in your Honour and Hope that no matter where you are, on this Earth or the Next, that you're happy and remember the fun that you've had.
    VALERE IUBERE
All Flags of the People's Republics will be lowered to Half Mast for the day with the Passing of one of the most influential nations on the face of NationStates.
  • LadyRebels: The Flags of LadyRebels will fly at half mast for a week of mourning, to show the respect that Francos Spain held, as a player of a game.
Those that got to know him, I salute you. Know that there are those of us out there that wished to have gotten to know him better.
*places three roses on the memorial of Francos Spain, one a full bloom White Rose, to express the purity of thoughts to him and his family. One a full bloom Red Rose to show the love that many held for him and will so until their memories are taken from them. One a Deep Royal Purple, the respect of one National Leader to another.*
May you have a strong wind at your back and following seas on your Journey, know that you will be missed. Take care friend, and go with peace.
*Seven Cannons fire off three shots into the night sky over LR*
  • Kingman Reef: ...Nothing less than legendary.
  • Unfree People: No hailing here either, but I will join you in saluting his memory. Words can't really express my feelings... I miss the guy.
  • Mammothistan: The light of our world has gone out. We have lost the Great Pacifican.
  • BlackAdder goes Forth: His colours are home. God rest you Francos.
  • Sir Paul: May the road rise with you!
May the wind be at your back!
May the sun be on your face!
May the rain fall soft upon your fields!
    And, until we meet again,
May the good Lord hold you in the palm of His hand.
