Paul I of Brasland

Paul I (1745-1822) was the fourth King of Brasland. He was the son of King Frederick II.

In 1773 he married Princess Helena of Winthuria. It was an arranged match, but they were very happy together. They had children: Elistansa (1774-1776), George (born 1776), Klementine (born 1777; nun), Johannes (born 1780), Marie Christine (born 1781), Caroline (born 1783), Ludwig (born and died 1786) and Theresia (born 1789). Helena died in 1791.

Paul remarried in 1802 to Princess Marianne of Goldany. It was a mutually beneficial union, as Marianne was a good consort, but Paul never loved her as he loved Helena. The marriage was childless.

In 1806 Paul succeeded his brother as King of Brasland. He was more moderate than Frederick, but he continued many of his plans, such as the freedom of the serfs in 1818 and the creation of Parliament in 1820. He is remembered for those two events, which had a deep impact in Braslander society.

King Paul I died in 1822 and was succeeded by his son, George I.
