History
The unit; previously known as the Presidential Guard Battalion was formed in 1964 in response to the assassination of several world leaders. The unit was notorious for committing the 1985 San Marcos Massacre, in which they killed 20 protesting civilians demanding the resignation of then president Alberto Santos. As a result the unit was disbanded until 1992, when it was reformed by then president Adrián Gómez as separate non-military unit. In 2010, during the 2010-11 5-A Protests personnel from the agency shot dead three people whom broke through police lines and began attacking them with metal pipes. Since then, the unit has been attempting to rid itself of it's previous notoriety.
