Sanctum (Norse: Griðastaður) is a continent that lies to the east of the Panatlantic Ocean on Aeolis.

Sanctum is bordered by the North Ocean to the north, the Panatlantic Ocean to the west, the Sea of Summer to the south, and the Velentinian Ocean to the west.

Sanctum is Aeolis´ second-largest continent by surface area, covering about 210 001 890 km². Of Sanctum´s 2 countries, the Kingdom of Trondelagen is the larger by both area while the Holy Empire of Terra Sancte is the larger by population. Sanctum is the smaller continent on the planet by population second only to Zetron which is utterly devoid of any human life, except unmanned drones.

Etymology

Both Sanctum and Griðastaður mean the same thing. The continent was named by the Empire of Terra Sancte when the Patriarchate of Rome asked the now defunct Aeolian Colonization Committee for an area on the planet to become church administered territory. The southern part of the continent was given.

History

The continent of Sanctum was first thoroughly explored by explorers of the Rethymnian Empire in 2256 but it wasn´t colonized by the already extremely large nation across the ocean.

After the Rethymnian Empire reconnected to the Interstellar System of Communications in 2277, the area of Sanctum was opened up for colonization. Rethymnon, until that time the only nation on the planet set up the Aeolian Colonization Committee which received hundreds upon thousands of requests for colonies to be established on the planet. In 2279, the Patriarchate of Rome requested for land to be given under church administration. Thusly, the Holy Empire of Terra Sancte was set up in the south of the empire, under the direct administration of the Patriarch of Rome who is the head of state and thusly, Holy Emperor.

In 2298 the Kingdom of Scandinavia´s request for an autonomous colony was granted and thus the Kingdom of Trondelagen, which while autonomous, still recognizes the King of Scandinavia as its overlord.

Both nations, due to their distance from their parent states had a very limited population, until recently in 2540, the population in both nations started increasing.

Geography and climate

The continent is generally warm with the coldest parts of it are its south. Most of it is mountainous and contains a plethora of lakes and dense forestation.
