South Staynes, referred to as The Commonwealth of South Staynes, is a moderately large sized nation in central Aurora, known by its hilly lifestyle and chilly, jagged coastline, has a rough population of about 160 million. It is noted that around 6,000,000 people live in the municipality of Labius. It neighbours are Staynes, Axdel, which it shares the largest border with, MMH, and Ethalria. The Isle of Rek, which is one of the oldest settled islands in Aurora, neighbours Tuvaltastan, Imperial Fandom & Dragonia.
South Staynes declared independence from the Morstaybishlian Empire on the 6th of June, 1975, due to Staynes becoming economically and militarily weak, which could not maintain the region. It later had no other options but to reinstate member status of the empire after several years borderline anarchy. The nation now struggles with a below average income per person.
Poverty crisis
South Staynes has always suffered with high income inequality. In 2016, approximately sixty percent of the population live off of the land, generally as farmers in hobbit style houses trading in food and possessions as they cannot sustain themselves in the system. The other 40% live in the system as a functioning government body and population. A system integration program was established in 2005 to try and sway more people to move to urbanised areas and live above or at minimum wage according to AU standards. However, this has only resulted in a small percentage of people converting.
Government
South Staynes has a parliamentary government based on ancient Staynish tradition, with a few implications. The higher three houses in the South Staynish Parliament meets in Senate Building whilst the lowest house is represented by elected representatives from each parish and meet in individual buildings of high status in each of the South Staynish states. The parliament system is ranked as one of the most complicated in Urth, with four houses: an elected Parish House which serves under an elected State House, which feeds into the elected Lords House that is underneath the appointed Senate House. All bills are given Royal assent before becoming law.
South Staynes holds a general election every 6 years unless under certain conditions. South Staynes uses the first-past-the-post voting system. South Staynes held its first election in 1975, a week after their independence from Staynes during the end of the Auroran Imperial War. The number of seats obtained by a party is represented by the percentage of votes they receive. There is a total of 490 seats in the Senate House, so if a party receives a 20% voter turnout, they will have 98 seats. The party with the most seats can elect a Prime Minister, although in a parties campaign they would most likely have already elected an individual.
There are around 12 parties in South Staynes that each have over 15,000 members, of which 4 have seats in the Senate House. The SS Conservative Party won 53.03% of the seats in the 2011 general election, whilst the SS Communist Party won 30.13% and the SS Labour Party won 10.13%. The other percentage is narrowly divided by the other parties. Only two parties have ever won the election.
