Institute of Medicine

The Rutu Tamatea Institute of Medicine was a nursing college founded by Rutu Tamatea in 1930. She taught nurses basic healthcare. She received a permit from the state to found a formal school and train nurses with formal qualifications. The Rutu Tamatea Foundation was founded by her daughter, Ana Tamatea. With a large donation of land and funds from the Makoa Pharmaceutical Company, they managed to buy the land on which the current institute sits.

The Institute has 1,000 students and 50 staff. It has 20 major researchers. 30 have been awarded professorships by the National University Councils. 5 are chairs of the Oan Medical Research Council. The academic staff are academics and qualified healthcare professionals. On average the Institute receives 200 guest lecturers and volunteer training personnel. The administrative head of the institute is the Rector.

The Institute is located near the central business district of La Rochelle. The La Rochelle Medical Healthcare Center is a large hospital owned by the La Rochelle Local Government that is located in the campus of the La Rochelle Medical Institute. Students and academics comprise most of its healthcare staff. These roles range from nurses to general physicians, pharmacists and specialised surgeons. The largest building in the complex is the Hospital Center where patience are housed and doctors have their offices. The hospital as a whole can accomodate 1,000 sleeping patients. Most patients are referred to other hospitals for long-term treatment and care.

The Library is second largest building. It has a collection of over 300,000 printed publications. It has every copy of the National Medical Journal ever printed. It also has a large collection of ancient written texts. Most date to over a century, but some date back hundreds of years. There are paper manuscripts, wood panels and stone tablets documenting traditional medical treatment and diagnosis techniques. Most of the information has been recorded in books that are accessible in the main library, but the collection of ancient writings is kept in the underground vaults of the library. The items are rotated for display in the Museum. The Museum also houses other artefacts such as utensils and machines.

The Faculty represents the staff while the student council represents the students. It is elected every year and appoints a board that oversees the management of student affairs. The student council is housed in the students building that also houses recreational facilities and computer labs for students. There are various extracurricular societies such as religious societies, a choir and band, and sports societies. Nursing and paramedical students study for free, but dental and other medical students pay the highest fees in the University of La Rochelle system.
