The Upstart class, designated Proyekt-3330 by Sverd Industries, is a class of multirole frigate designed for the Kistani Navy.

Development

Following the disintegration of the Kistani Empire, what was left of the country approached the United Federation of Prizyetsa to construct revamp it's navy and bring it up to date. In turn, the Federation pointed the new government to Sverd Industries, the provider of much of Prizyetsa's military hardware and arguably the best shipbuilders in the region, to design and build the Kistani Navy's new class of frigates, the Upstart class.

The Upstart class, designated Proyekt-3330 by Sverd Industries needed to fill two main roles, namely picket duty and fleet air defense. Additionally, the Upstart class is also tasked with deploying mines for coastal defense and area denial. Because of the need to fill these multiple roles, Sverd Industries decided that a modular approach would be best, allowing developers to keep it's size and unit cost down. To further save costs, the class would be built using lessons learned from the Prizyetsi M Class Frigate (Prizyetsa).

Propulsion

The Upstart class is fitted with brand-new CODLAG (Combined Diesel-Electric and Gas) type propulsion system just like the M-Class frigate. This, an upgrade from the older “Combined Diesel and Gas” systems, contains the same basic elements but will not allow simultaneous use of the alternative drive sources.

The system incorporates 4 diesel engines and a gas turbine to run electric motors, which in turn run the propeller shafts through gear boxes. The ships are driven by 2 propellers. The diesel engines are intended for use during general cruising, and the gas turbine is intended for use during combat-maneuvers. A major advantage of this system is that electricity for the ship’s systems can be directly supplied by the engines meaning that there is no need for extra engines to power the ship. Another advantage of the diesel-electric transmission is that without the need of a mechanical connection, the diesel generators can be decoupled acoustically from the hull of the ship, making it less noisy. This adds to the class’ stealth and aids in their combating of submarines.
