Anhur (pronounced /ænhər/) officially The Hegemony of the Anhurian Realm, is a heavily developed desertous nation located in the north of the western continent of Audax. It currently borders a total of three nations. By both land and sea Anhur borders the nation of Hawkwick to the east and the nation of Vandinium to the southwest. It also has a maritime border with Vipura a colony of Artstotszka to the north.

Anhur, a nation that maintains a territorial population of 2.585 billion sapient beings is an obvious superpower on the planet of Audax. While the nation does not keep a domination in the realm of population it is noted as one of the most stable technological and military strongholds. Being an alliance of independent city-states based out of the city of Tala it maintains stability through an extensive system of checks on individual power, not allowing any one person to gain any significant power.

While Anhurians do not share a strong nationalistic unity they do share a very strong bond in their shared cultural heritage. They have a unifying language in Base (Aka English), despite each province owning their own native language. Economically they are heavily focused on manufacturing and mining but ultimately are extremely selective when it comes to trade, preferring to trade with members of their own species and extremely close time tested allies.

History

The Anhurian Desert has a history that can be traced back almost 7,000 years to approximately 2,540 B.D.M.(aka 4,875 B.C.E.). Anhurians evolved from a cousin species of the modern Human Species. They originally where very similar albeit the Anhur Species being slightly more adapted to Desert life than Humans. They were originally several dozen bands of nomadic tribes that wandered the land. Until they started to settle down and build cities which quickly banded together and created several small nations.

First Era - The Era of Organization (2,540 BDM - 1,001 BDM)

The first of the four Major Eras of Anhur's history. It is also credited as the second longest era and the one with the most technological advancement in the shortest time. It saw major advancements including the the reformatting of the Anhurian Genetic Structure, the launch into space, and the meddling into several human cultures guiding them as they developed.

First Sub-Era - The Era of Three (2,540 BDM - 2,100 BDM)

At the around the year 2,540 BDM(4,875 BCE)several small nations started to appear out of the several dozen settlements that were being established by the Anhurians. Among them was what is today considered the three ancient states. In the South emerged The Na'Jalit Federation a democratic network of several small villages, In the East rose The Kingdom of Sobek lead by one large family that ruled a large swath of territory with an iron grip, and finally in the North materialized The Telvay Theocracy which was a vast alliance of several religious settlements that ruled through a theory of divine right.

Until 2,370 BDM(4,705 BCE) there was relative peace minus a few minor border skirmishes. That was until the Priests of Telvay initiated a plan to "convert" the citizens Sobek. What they did not expect was the push back they would receive from the Royals of Sobek. The fighting eventually erupted into a full scale war which sparked a massive technological revolution originating in the Mountain Fortress of Alkataren, the Capital of Sobek. Riding this wave of advancement in 2,100 BMD the Armies of Sobek swept right through the Telvay territories eventually turning the entire nation of Telvay into a Vassal State, before eventually just annexing the territory and abolishing the Cult of Telvay.

Second Sub-Era - The Era of Two (2,099 BDM - 1,550 BDM)

With control of the central and the Northern territories, Sobek was the clear leader in territory. And with the addition of the population of Telvay, Sobek held a vast lead in population. This scared the only other major state, the Na'Jalit Federation into enacting "minimum child" policies only 10 years after the end of the Telvay-Sobek war. The subsequent population boom lead to a 25% population increase in just 50 years, and in the resulting chaos of reorganizing the Federation as the population swelled the nation entered a technological boom fast tracking the Federation what is now considered to be "Modern" Technology, which through trade and spies the Kingdom of Sobek quickly followed suit. Though the Kingdom's economy and population lagged severely. The Federation kept fighting towards technological advancement and within only a hundred and fifty years of reaching "Modern" technology they launched their first commercial spacecraft with regular trips to and from the planet's satellite moon. Sobek on the other hand stagnated and failed to reach 'post-modern' status unlike the Federation. This prompted the Nobles of Sobek to launch a preemptive strike on the Federation. But due to technological and military strength differences within only a handful of years Sobek was eventually broken up and absorbed into the Federation.

Third Sub-Era - The Era of One (1,549 BMD - 1,001 BMD)

The Federation took the next century reorganizing its territory and more closely integrating the people of the now defunct state of Sobek into their society. During this time the Federation started to look outside of itself. For the first time in its history it was uncontested, it didn't have to worry about security outside of itself, most of the Human States where in their infancy at best. So around 1,425 BMD for the first time the Federation stated to expand outside of itself. Within a century over three dozen secret outposts where created throughout the region and where used to help guide and spur the advancement of the fledgling human cultures. Concurrently, the Federation was looking to the stars and had set up colonies on both Irsian the Anhurian name for the moon orbiting the planet and Kalara the name for closest semi-habitable planet, along with constructing about a dozen different deep space stations to research high grade weapons and Faster-Than-Light Technology. That research eventually paid off and FTL was reached in the form of a "Teleportation" Drive, that would pull a spaceship an out of the dimension for a split second and would move at its height several thousand kilometers at a time. As technology expanded in the Federation so did its reach. At its height there were several dozen colonies in just as many solar systems. In just a handful of centuries the Federation had gone from a newly unified state to a massive extra-solar power. And as the Federation expanded, the Anhurians changed, as the Federation dabbled in Genetic Manipulation to try and give the Anhurains another edge as they moved through the stars.

Second Era - The Millennium of Tears

The second era was a quiet sad time. It saw the collapse of the Federation at its peak. The people where celebrating their economy was booming, their territory was expanding, and the technology was advancing by the day. Little did they expect what was to come. Abruptly it all ended and right as things when they though everything was returning to normal, nature stuck against them and nearly wiped them out.

Fourth Sub-Era - The Era of Fissures (1,000 BMD - 540 BMD)

While the last Sub-Era ended on a high note, the economy and the territory were expanding. Resources were flowing back from the lucrative colonies, including many biological resources like the now common Sand Ray, which allowed for great works to be built and for technology to be researched. The Modern Anhurian Species was rising out from the genetic manipulation at the end of the last era and the realm of science was looking for the next great challenge. This was found in Inter-Dimensional Travel. This ended up being the downfall of the Federation. The research kicked off unnoticed, and had even made a few tests, until they made a functional prototype.

The scientists ran their first test opening a rift to a random dimension. Little did they know, this other dimension had already been taken over by a highly advanced species and this test was seen as an incursion and an act of war. The entire science team was slaughtered, and the other species stabilized and expanded the rift to the point where they started bringing their own ships through. The Federation Space Fleet moved to meet them but at almost every turn where outmatched. Colony after Colony was taken and every Anhurian that could fled back to the Desert they called home. But in very little time even the home system was threatened. The Federal Fleet was in pieces and once the unknown enemy reached the Desert instead of a ground assault like the leadership was expecting. They detonated a high yield EMP destroying most of the tech in all except the most heavily shielded city the Golden City of the Federation, the capital. And when that failed to take out the capital the flagship of the alien fleet fired its main gun. Piercing the shielding and turning the city of almost 700 Millin into a crater. Wiping out 90% of the leadership in one blow. All that was left of the once great city was a giant crater fully of massive glass structures that still stand to this day.

Just as quickly as they appeared the enemy had disappeared beyond the rift closing it with them. Chaos ensued as many of the technologies that were failing. Power vacuums formed with the most senior official left in the Federation being the Minister of Agriculture and vastly under qualified to lead. A civil war ensued as and after millions lay dead even more technology failed. As the population fell to levels unseen since the first Sub-Era of Anhur, peace finally returned with very few of the cities still intact.

Fifth Sub-Era - The Era of Nature Rising

Civilization was at a lower point by the time that the fifth sub-era. The population was reduced to one of its lowest levels in several thousand years, falling to as low as one hundred million. But this was not the true low point of the Anhurian People and their Federation. A little holdout from the war. What the Anhurian People did not realize was that there was a device left by their attacks that went undetected. Over the course of a few hundred years the desert was drastically changed for the worse, it started off gradually but by the mid 300s BDM massive sandstorms, earthquakes, and more were ripping their way through the nation.

What few settlements were left standing where quickly destroyed and were lost to the sands. Forcing the few Anhurians who were left into a nomadic life as their technology continued to fail from the events of the previous sub-era. Though not even a nomadic lifestyle protected them for long, many fell to the sands and the population went into a free fall. This drove the culture of the Anhurians to shift drastically as individualism and greed where swaps in favour of collectivism and community. The nomadic bands formed into family groups called clans and the Guardian Religion flourished with the belief of a collective spirit of the Anhurian People.
