The Mercian Empire
The Disputed Territories of The Mercian Empire is a tiny, efficient nation, remarkable for its keen interest in outer space, irreverence towards religion, and complete absence of social welfare. The hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 7 million Mercians are ruled with an iron fist by the corrupt, dictatorship government, which oppresses anyone who isn't on the board of a Fortune 500 company. Large corporations tend to be above the law, and use their financial clout to gain ever-increasing government benefits at the expense of the poor and unemployed.
The tiny, pro-business government juggles the competing demands of Defense, Law & Order, and Industry. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 5.8%.
The powerhouse Mercian Empirean economy, worth 561 billion Pounds a year, is driven almost entirely by the private sector, which is broadly diversified and led by the Gambling industry, with significant contributions from Door-to-door Insurance Sales, Arms Manufacturing, and Information Technology. Average income is 80,270 Pounds, but there is a significant disparity between incomes, with the richest 10% of citizens earning 293,448 per year while the poor average 15,574, a ratio of 18.8 to 1.

Crime is a problem, with the police force struggling against a lack of funding and a high mortality rate. The Mercian Empire's national animal is the Lion, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation.
