The World Hit Festival 40 was the 40th edition of the World Hit Festival. The contest was held in Izmedu, in Mousiki, after Izmedu's win at the 39th World Hit Festival in Darkmania, where "El Paradais" sung by Lana Vukusic won for the nation with 42 points. RTI decided to host for the 6th time in 11 editions.

The eventual winner of the competition was Izmedu with the song "Hladna pluaya" sung by Zoran Milos. This marked the third edition in a row where a non-English song won the competition. This win became the nation's 5th win in history, breaking the record of points received by the winner, gaining a total of 48 points. The runner-up of the competition was Britonisea, who received their fourth 2nd place, but matched the 45-point record held by Euskirribakondara since World Hit Festival 13. The nation also won their respective Semi-Final (2). In third place was Todaskakys, who won a total of 42 points. The nation reached the podium for the first time in their history and also won their respective Semi-Final (1).

Location

Mousiki (population: ~143,000) is Izmedu's fourth largest city and rests on Izmedu's most southern tip as the district seat for the District of Ivica. Existing as Izmedu's most 'exposed' city as the city closest to both Izmedu's political, land, and maritime borders, this led to Mousiki developing a strong regional identity that is still Izmeduan and yet distinct from its parent country. Most recently, Mousiki has gained greater international prominence by playing host to the World Hit Festival 31. Additionally, a city associated with Izmedu and Todlichebujoku (Dreiichibu-u-Mousiki, officially also connected to the city of Mousiki) played host to the 55th WorldVision under a joint TOBUK, RTVK, and RTI production. All in all, Mousiki's name has been circulating around the hosting reaches. Despite economic difficulties after WHF31, the city has swung around and is now taking the responsibility of hosting WHF's ruby anniversary.

Mousiki in the 31st festival was largely defined by its contributions to culture and how it is almost similar to the Izmeduan capital, Vodiznad, in some respects. In the ensuing time since then, Mousiki has pivoted its identity to becoming Izmedu's prime source of music, both in the traditional and modern sense of the form. In trying to remain competitive with Gralicna's rise and Posony's monopolization of the culture game, Mousiki offers World Hit Festival goers an experience of music that does not stop in the moment they touch down to the city. As you step foot onto the streets, the amount of mandolins and klapa singers will overwhelm you as it is a common sight to often see public performers from block to block. On top of a multitude of street performers, another common sight in Mousiki (especially in its nighttime scene), is the prolific amount of bars, nightclubs, and live performances of orchestras and classic music. These kinds of occurrences do tend to be in season, but there will confluence around the World Hit Festival season; offering World Hit Festival visitors a chance to experience all spectrums of music in Mousiki.

Remaining from the World Hit Festival 31 are the vast amounts of hotels and lodging available to people visiting Izmedu in time for the 40th festival. While Mousiki was somewhat well-prepared for the 40th contest, the city's resources and lodgings were well overstrapped by the greater amount of resources anticipated. This time around, there are more accommodation options available in Mousiki more than ever, with the city council coordinating with local minor and major cities around to help make sure that visitors are well-rested and enjoying their Mousiki experience prior to the big show.

Additionally, there are a vast array of things for you to see, experience, and do in Mousiki. The music scene has already been described in the second paragraph, and visitors are absolutely free to peruse and experience them as they see fit. Performances will be held locally by the Mousiki Symphony Orchestra in various concert halls near the WHF40 venue. Additionally, there will be daily discounts to music bars and nightclubs up until the week of the contest itself, were entrance to the clubs will become free. However, if you want to save your music experience for the night itself? Mousiki has you covered. The city has various amounts of museums, eateries, and nature walks in the surrounding mountains if you're more of a person that wants to experience mid-city life.

All in all, if you want something to do, Mousiki is more better-equipped than ever to serve your needs as a city. Whether you are a young WHF fan that wants a taste of the nightclub life in a more traditional and smaller setting, or someone who simply wants a relaxing city setting to wander in before the show, Mousiki has precisely what you need.

Format

Recognizing that the past few World Hit Festivals have conducted a more back-to-basics approach to the voting reveal, Izmedu will retain the style used from the 37th to 39th festival. Thus, Izmedu will for the first time use the classic reveal system that's been utilized for the majority of the World Hit Festival's history. For the 40th edition, there will be no phases or fancy ways to reveal the votes. For those new to the World Hit Festival, your 1 to 5 votes will be revealed all at once, with only your spokesperson saying who the 5 points goes to. The running order of the votes shall be determined when the voting is complete.

Revival of the Semi Final Format

In the handbook for the World Hit Festival, a Semi Final stage would be triggered when 30 nations were confirmed to be going to the World Hit Festival. This happened for the first time since the third World Hit Festival. It was being debated amongst the Ivan Sandic (the current World Hit Festival Overseer as of the 40th World Hit Festival) and former World Hit Festival Overseers, especially the one from Saintrabina as to how this would happen in Izmedu. They decided to go ahead with it after an official message by Mr Sandic.

It was also announced the Semi Finals would be decided using a random draw.

Participating Nations

On the 26th July 2018, RTI announced that 30 nations would participate in the World Hit Festival 40 in Mousiki. This made the contest one of the largest World Hit Festival contests ever. The idea of the Semi-Finals was agreed to by all the broadcasters, though it was suggested that some broadcasters did not like the idea of the Semi-Finals being put in place.
