Ygärd class submarine

The Ygärd class Diesel Electric Submarine, originally called the Ladanja class, is the smallest attack submarine built by the Vosonje Shipyard Group. Primarily designed for the export market, the Yenna class is a relatively cost-efficient solution to the need for a small, relliable and proven platform. The Yenna is the culmination of decades of Prizyetsi submarine building and operating, and uses Prizyetsa's experience in submarine warfare to create the best possible platform available on the market to fill the SSK bracket, especially for smaller nations with a smaller defense budget.

Development History

Designed in 2001 and first launched, the Yenna class has just finished it's 10 year anniversary since first being launched from the Vosonje Shipyards for the former nation of Laviy, and was the first of the 5 "Batch A" ships. Since the first of the Yena class left the docks, several major changes have taken place, each creating a better platform in terms of offensive-defensive capability, crew living quality and handlability.

One of the upgrade packages for the Yenna class was the 2010 Weapons Standardization Package, which was part of the Prizyetsi navy's standardization process for all weapons systems used by the fleet. The old 400mm torpedo tubes were replaced with the new Prizyetsi special 480mm torpedo tubes, standardising all torpedoes used within the navy. Included in this upgrade was the availability to fire the "Kotka" hypersonic cruise missile from within a special capsule via the fore torpedo tubes from a shallow depth of 10m below the surface. This upgrade increased the strategic capability of the Yenna class to fullfill a wide variety of missions and tasks which would normally require a larger submarine class to carry out.

Another upgrade was caried out to the defensive armement of the Yenna class. Before the 2010 WSP, the defensive armement of carried by the Yenna class of submarines was made up of sonar decoys to avoide torpedoes, and thermal decoys, which were used for the same reason. After the upgrades, the sonar decoys, which had been in service since the 1960's, were totally removed and replaced by the infamous directed sonar "pingers", which had been in wide use by the Prizyetsi navy since the mid 1990's, and wereproven to be succesfull at disabling both torpedoes and enemy sonar systems in past conflicts. The therml decoys, having been in use since the 1970's remain in the defensive armement of the class.

A strong emphesis was placed on stealth, with the idea that if the sub could remain unseen, it could avoid comprimization and therfor protect the crew and the sub from being destroyed. The Vosonje Shipyards, in conjunction with the Prizyetsi Admiralty, decided that sonar-absorbent foam was a good solution to this issue, and had already been proven to be a viable method of sonar evasion on-board the Hai class of hunter-killer nuclear submarines also in service with the Prizyetsi navy and built by the Vosonje Shipyards. Since the Yenna class was also meant for export, the foam coating was designed to only be semi-sonar absorbent in order to keep the make of the semi-absorbent foam a secret.

Extra emphasis was also placed on the comfort of the crew in order to increase the morale during deployment. The crew berths onboard the Yenna class of submarines have more free space per sailor than many other ships, as well as different berths and sanitary facilities for both genders although many Prizyetsi sailors, both male and female often use communal showers seeing as it is socially acceptable to do so in Prizyetsa. Recreational areas were also upgraded from the former standards of the Prizyetsi navy, creating 2 small common rooms, a general lounge completely furneshed with leather seating an adequate entertainment system, as well as seperate furnished mess areas for both the crew and officers.
