Leonard Schmitt, also known as Leonard Ernst Schmitt (5 March 1896 – 2 May 1916), was a Rotgeheiman Stabsrottenführer (Senior Lance Corporal) in the Verteidigungsstaffel. During the Invasion of Scheinfeld, Schmitt, who was a dispatch rider, heroically braved enemy small arms and artillery fire in order to deliver crucial weapons and ammunition to a surrounded unit. He successfully accomplished his mission, but unfortunately he was mortally wounded in the process and died soon after he delivered his cargo. For his heroism Schmitt was posthumously awarded Rotgeheim's highest order, the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.
