Queen Eliane of Friskland (born Eliane Henriette Gabrielle de Beaumont; January 19, 1897 - May 21, 1983) was the French-born Queen consort of Friskland from her husband's accession in 1941 to his death in 1978. She was married to Carl Vilhelm V of Friskland.
Early life
Eliane was born in Paris, France on January 19, 1897. Her father, Maxime de Beaumont (1869-1931), was a politician in the French National Assembly. Her mother, Marie-Ophélie (née Cassaud; 1871-1949) was a housewife. Eliane was the second of the couple's children; she had three brothers and two sisters: Guillaume (1896-1959); Alice (1898-1974); Thérèse (1900-1963); Jean-Louis (1901-1968); Maxime (1904-1980); and Marc-Émile (1906-1971).
In 1909, when Eliane was 12 years old, her father was appointed French Ambassador to Friskland. The family moved with their father to Jättenholm where he took up his diplomatic post. Maxime de Beauchamp remained in this post for 12 years, and when the time came for the family to return home, the now 24-year-old Eliane decided to remain in Friskland.
Marriage and family
Through her father's work, she became acquainted with the then-Crown Prince Carl Vilhelm of Friskland. Eliane and Carl Vilhelm developed a good relationship with each other, and shared mutual friends. They soon after began courting, and it was officially announced in 1927 that they were engaged to be married.
Eliane and Carl Vilhelm were married in the Royal Chapel at Jättenholm on July 13, 1928. They took a honeymoon shortly afterwards, going on a whistle-stop tour of Europe, visiting countries such as France, Switzerland, Italy and Germany.
The couple had two children:
- Henrik VII (Henrik Folke Carl Johan; 24 July 1932 - 23 October 2012)
- Prince Emil, Duke of Sönderholm (Emil Alexander Vilhelm Erik; 19 December 1934 - 28 March 2016)
Eliane was known to have suffered various miscarriages throughout her life, which was a source of great pain to her.
