He was born in 1899 as the son of Count Burchard VIII von Henslen, a prominent Conservative politician, and his wife, Countess Iris von Lindau.
In 1920 he fell in love with the young Larissa, daughter of Count Rudolf von Reuthen, a former Liberal politician who had been a rival of Ulrich's father. The couple became secretly engaged, but when this was known by their fathers it caused a great scandal. Initially both noblemen rejected the match, but they were eventually convinced by their families and gave their consent.
