In 1778 he married Countess Caroline von Reitzenstein. They had seven children: Ludwig (born 1779), Luise (born and died 1780), Margarethe (born 1781), Philippa (born and died 1783), Hubertus (born 1785), Henriette (1786-1787) and Alexander (born 1790).

He was a prominent courtier and served King Frederick III.
