The dechristianization of Eslar during the Libertine Revolution is a conventional description of the results of the program known as 'Libertinization' conducted by the government of Eslar between 1829 and 1845. The goal of the campaign was the destruction of Catholic religious practice and of the religion itself. There has been much scholarly debate over whether the movement was popularly motivated or something forced upon the people by those in power.

Religion and the Catholic Church under Spanish rule

In Eslar the vast majority of the population adhered to the Catholic Church as Catholicism had been since the invasion of the Spanish the only religion officially allowed in the viceroy. The Catholic church became a symbol of discontent among colonials and natives within Eslar, whom formed secret societies aimed at removing its power.
