Alterrum, officially the Federation of Alterrum, is an island country located in northern Canada. The country has a population of 8,623,713 and a total area of 526,830 square kilometers. It borders Almonaster Nuevo to the southwest, Boreal Tundra to the northwest, Mr Popo to the northeast and Cowland5 to the south. Around 70% of Alterrum lies above the Arctic Circle, and most of the country has a subarctic climate.

Alterrum is a federation of 24 states, based on culture, geography and history, and has historically been decentralized - a unified state never existed until the foundation of the federation in 1832. Many governmental functions are under the control of local governments, where citizens have a large say in, so Alterrum can also be described as a semi-direct democracy. Since its inception in the 19th century, the federation has been at peace with other nations.

Alterrum has a well preserved natural environment due to a political consensus about environmental protection, as nature is traditionally held in high regard. The country is also seeking to become a carbon-negative nation, removing more greenhouse gases than emitting, by 2015.

Politically, Alterrum is best described as deeply democratic, liberal and stable. The range of political positions of politicians is wide and there are many alternatives for the voters to choose from. Nevertheless, decision-making is consensus-driven, and making sure that everyone has been able to voice their opinion is a priority. Ideology doesn't play a big role, and politics is generally laid-back and relaxed.

Alterrum has a market-based economy, while maintaining a welfare system that provides universal healthcare and free education up to and including the tertiary level. It has also embraced corporate welfare, where small business is heavily subsidized to encourage local economic development. Starting a business is very easy, but large corporations and the economy in general are much more regulated. Efforts have been made to democratize large business - for example, workers in large corporations vote for 50% of their company's board. Protests and strikes are taken as a fundamental right, and conflicts are usually solved in 3-way negotiations between unions, corporations and the state. Minimum wages are set by unions for their respective sectors. Alterrum has one of the highest tax rates in the world, however many citizens are not anti-tax, and would welcome even higher taxes to pay for a fair and well-functioning society.

Alterran culture is founded upon its Norse heritage, which in some ways has remained very similar to its original form, as European explorers after the 15th century never colonized the island. However, it has also developed its own perks as immigration has been a large contributor to Alterrum's population growth since the 19th century. With even higher rates of immigration and support for it in recent years, modern Alterran culture is an increasingly changing mix of cultures from around the world, with everyone contributing their own bit. Currently, 36% of people living in Alterrum were born in another country.
