Alterrum, officially the Federation of Alterrum, is an island country located in northern Canada. The country has a population of 8,623,713 and a total area of 526,830 square kilometers. The capital and largest city is Kiroesatta. Around 70% of Alterrum lies above the Arctic Circle, and most of the country has a subarctic climate.

Alterrum is a federation of 24 states, based on culture, geography and history. The region has been historically decentralized - a unified state had not existed until the foundation of the federation in 1832, which at the time began as a trade union. Most governmental functions have remained under the control of states and local municipalities or kommuner, where citizens are involved directly, so Alterrum can also be described as a semi-direct democracy. Since its inception in the 19th century, the federation has avoided military conflicts with other nations, practicing a policy of "neutrality in wartime and non-participation in military alliances during peacetime".

Until the 20th century, Alterrum had one of the smallest populations in the world, averaging around one million citizens, and its economy relied largery upon fishing and mining. However, the population saw a rapid increase after Alterrum liberalized its immigration laws in the 1900s, adopting a policy of granting citizenship to almost everyone wanting to live in the country. Since then, immigration has been a large contributor to Alterrum's population growth. With large-scale industrialisation programs undertaken at the same time, Alterrum has developed into one of the wealthiest and most developed nations in the world.

Today, Alterrum has a market-based economy, while maintaining a welfare system similar to that of the Nordic countries. Efforts have also been made to democratize businesses - for example, workers in large corporations vote for 50% of their company's board. Alterrum ranks high in political and economic stability, and has largely been unaffected by the late financial crisis. Equality of all sorts is traditionally highly valued in Alterrum, although its Gini index has seen a steady increase since the nineties, when many market-based reforms were carried out to boost the nation's economy.
