George Andreas Skleros Synadenos, 20th Duke of Phrygia KP PC (25 June 1785 – 14 February 1853), styled Marquess of Daktylíou until 1806, was a Diadochian peer, courtier and Prásinoi politician. Known as the "Bachelor Duke", he was Megas Parakoimomenos between 1822 and 1823 and again between 1825 and 1829.
Background and education
Born in Atlantis, Diadochia, Synadenos was the son of Giannis Synadenos, 19th Duke of Phrygia, and Lady Euphrosyne Skleros, daughter of the Earl Skleros. He was educated at Lelex School and Holy Trinity College, Corinth. His mother died in 1801 and in 1806, aged 21, he succeeded his father in the dukedom. Along with the title he inherited eight stately homes and 500,000 acres of land. He spent much of his life redesigning and improving his estates.
Political Career
Politically Phrygia followed in the Prásinoi family tradition. He supported Freedom of religion, the abolition of slavery and reduced factory working hours. He held office as Megas Parakoimomenos under two Prime Ministers. In 1822 he was sworn of the Privy Council and made a Knight of the Panagia. He was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary to the Kingdom of Nevanmaa in 1821. He spent some time at the court of King Juhani II of Nevanmaa. The Duke was also Lord Lieutenant of Phrygia between 1806 and 1853.
Personal life
He was a close friend of Basil IV. Phrygia developed a keen interest in horticulture and was elected President of the Imperial Horticultural Society in 1833, in which position he served for twenty years until his death.
Phrygia died at Kopádi Hall, Phrygia, in February 1853, aged 67. As he was unmarried the dukedom passed to his cousin Giannis Synadenos, Earl of Chalinarión.
