The Komodu Institute of Science and Technology (often abbreviated as K.I.S.T.) is a residence teaching and research university. It was founded in 1970 as a research laboratory. Throughout the succeeding 10 years it was expanded and eventually incorporated as a research and learning university. As a result of its robust funding and relatively high academic freedom, it attracted the best students and academics. It has gradually ascended in the academic sphere for its research output and rigorous curriculum, attracting considerable acclaim. Its independence and strong-willed affirmation of liberal values has led to controversial encounters with the national government over the years. The school has 8,000 students, half of whom are graduate students. It has an endowment of 6 billion dollars.
