The NNP was founded in 1960 after independence as a military force with law enforcement duties until 1966, when it became a civilian force. Since 2010, the force has been undergoing numerous reforms and in December 2015 president Sandalio Joaquín Espina signed the Police Reform Act (Spanish: Ley de Reforma de la Policía) outlining new riot control procedures and reorganizing various tactical units into a single reserve; the URT or (Tactical Response Unit).

The duties of the National Police include; Crime prevention, crime investigation, anti-terrorism operations, Crowd control and immigration matters.

The Standard uniform of the National Police, since 1960.

The standard patrol uniform of the national police is an army green colored uniform which has been in use since the agency's formation. The uniform of the URT is in the same type as regular officers but is black in color.

  • OC Spray (Pepper Spray)
  • Collapsible Baton
  • Flashlight
  • Walther PPQ (Standard Police issue since 2012.)
