The NNP was founded in 1960 after independence as a branch of the military until 1966, when it became a civilian force. Since 2010, the force has been undergoing numerous reforms and in December 2015 president Sandalio Joaquín Espina signed the 2016 Police Reform Act (Spanish: Policía de 2016 la Reforma Ley) outlining new riot control procedures and reorganizing various tactical units into a single force.

The duties of the National Police include; Crime prevention, crime investigation, anti-terrorism operations, Crowd control and immigration matters.
Divisions
The National Police has five divisions each dedicated to a particular role;
- Patrulla de Carretera / Roadway Patrol - Tasked with policing federal roads and highways.
- Unidad de investigaciones de la Policía / Police Investigations Unit - Tasked with collecting evidence and forensics at crime scenes.
- PTSU - The Counter-Terrorism unit of the National Police.
Uniform
The standard patrol uniform of the national police is an rifle green colored uniform (in both long sleeve and short sleeve versions) which has been in use since the agency's formation.
Equipment
Each officer carries;
- TETRA communication radio
- Hinged-handcuffs
- OC Spray (Pepper Spray)
- Collapsible Baton
- Flashlight
- Walther PPQ (Standard Police issue since 2012.)
Vehicles
The NNP use a wide variety of vehicles to handle any situation. Including;
Škoda Octavia - Patrol Vehicle
Ford Mondeo - Patrol Vehicle
Ford Escape - Patrol/K-9 Unit Vehicle
Toyota Hilux - Police Truck
Dodge Charger - Patrol Vehicle (Used by Patrulla de Carretera / Roadway Patrol divison)
The new vehicle livery unveiled in 2016 consists of solid white with a green and white sillitoe tartan pattern along both sides of the vehicle, with the spanish and english versions of "POLICA" (POLICE) respectively on each side and POLICA on the hood.
