Sport
Sport is considered a national pastime in Anditia - many of the Anditon citizenry enjoy spending time at a sporting event to ease the burdens that lay upon their minds. The official national sport of Anditia is "järvboll" a sport similar to a mix between tennis and soccer played on a sheet of ice (for more information, see the Järvboll Factbook entry). The simplicity of the game allows it to be played during the wintertime at any location with ice (though thought to be originated on frozen riverbeds).
Järvboll
While järvboll maintiains its popularity amongst the populus of Anditia, ice hockey, tennis, american football ("football") and indoor lacrosse also rank amongst the most watched games both in person and on television. These four sports are collectively referred to as "the big four" and exist on many levels of competition.
Ice Hockey
Due to the long winters and icy conditions in Anditia, Ice Hockey tends to lead all other sports in both in formal participation and viewership. The Federation of Anditian Hockey (FAH) comprises the professional competition league at the national level. This league, founded in AC213, has its roots in smaller leagues that had been formed within the states previously. Currently there are 16 teams in two divisions that play a 61 game season (2 games out of conference, 3 within conference) with the top 8 teams making the playoffs (top 4 each conference, 4v1, 3v2, winner advances). The winner of the FAH, most recently the Helsar Icebergs, receives the coveted Winkton Cup.
Climate and Geography
Most of Anditia has what is considered to be a temperate climate with four distinct seasons and relatively mild temperatures throughout the year. It is much warmer and drier than many other places with similar northern latitudes due to the presence of the Oceanic Flow current that bathes its western coast. This current supplies a steady stream of warmer temperatures on the western side of Anditia while the eastern side largely suffers from temperatures approximately 5-10 degrees cooler. With temperate summers (Average high of 28 C) and fairly severe winters (Average high of -10 C), Anditia's residents have been described as "bred of a hearty stock" fitting of the national animal.
