Mereon [mehr-e-on] officially known as the Republic of Mereon is a small island nation located in the upper Mideast region of Maredoratica. Mereon consists of five larger islands, Almere, Downtown Core, Sluis, Hulst, and Hattem-Bolsward. Each of these islands is its own administrative district, as each have representatives on the Council of Districts.
Mereon has a land area of approximately 1,800 square kilometers (694 square miles), making it the smallest Maredoratic nation in terms of land size. Its population is 5.41 million, making it the [] least populated country in Maredoratica. Despite its small population, the Republic has a population density of 3,031 square kilometers (7,861 sq. miles). The Meronan islands are characterized by a temperate climate, unusual for the region. All five major islands in Mereon feature large mountains, but the tallest point is actually a man made structure, The Capitol, which sits at 550 meters tall, or 1,805 feet.

Etymology
Mereon takes its name from the [LANGUAGE] word Mai'eon [my-ron], meaning water. When the [NATION] colonized in [DATE], the word was used to denote the collection of islands in the Maredoratic. It was later translated into the Dutch Marion [mahr-e-on] and began appearing on official [NATION] maps around [DATE]. The English translation likely originated as a mispronunciation of the Dutch pronunciation of the letter 'a'. It didn't come into widespread use until the mid twentieth century, when Mereon gained independence.
