Ultimatus from Outcasts to War Leaders 429 AD - 2064
The Nation of Voltania was a huge vast nation renowned for its religious dominance over the land and the oppression of those who had views that dissented form the main course of things. So when the Brimstone War broke out in 429 AD it was obviously a one sided battle of the country of rich religious leaders against the poor farmers only just managing to scrounge by in a Nation built around multiple oasis in a large vast desert countryside. Voltania who was technologically ahead of its time utilizing iron in most if not all weapons and already beginning to experiment with alchemical methods to finding new stronger metals to form into weapons. These same weapons that the poor smiths and oppressed miners dug and forged were used against them in this war as Voltania started what would soon become an all out revolution.
With the advent of a new hemispherical man powered "tank" the farmers had almost no chance as this new experimental weapon was used against them firing volleys of arrows from the archers inside. The farmers quickly surrendered to the ensuing army and the Trials of Meshicklevana began. Each and every one of the rebels was sentenced individually over the next four years following the battles which ended in 445 AD. 370,000 people were sentenced to death by exile into the desert by the High Priestess Meshicklevana. When a lone shot from an archer was fired killing her and sending her grasping for air and assistance she fell into a brazer burning to death leaving her son to carry out the sentence. He son pardoned nearly half of them leaving only the violent ones to exile along with several of the military sections with them totaling 280,000 men women and warriors sentenced to death by exile.
With the aid of the rebel supporting military power they were forced into the unforgiving and deadly desert for the rest of their mortal lives. For about a year there merely survived by finding small oasis throughout the desert nearly 40% of the people died but the strong military were kept alive along with the women and children. The farmers and miners gave their lives to keep the strong alive. The remaining people lived long enough to find a large mountain in the middle of the desert and utilizing standard tools of the time managed to carve themselves shelter and began to settle down. With the discovery of an underground spring almost 7 months later it seemed as if the world was giving what they needed but nothing more. The population survived on the fruits of the land and began to mash rocks and sand together to make a form of artificial soil in order to grow crops.
The population was no longer dipping downward but instead they managed to grow bountiful amounts of food in order to survive and they hardly ever needed to go out into the desert. Approximately 400 years passed before another record of civilization showed up and the people managed to dig deep enough into the earth to find ores to build tools and the bustling population of nearly 4 million people had spread the in rock network downward enough to create a sort of tunnel network underground supported by stone pillars and archway constructs. These primitive version of support are still preserved today in some areas of Ultimatus as they were incredibly durable and not exposed to the elements. In the year 889 with its population fast approaching that of Voltania views began to circle around whether or not they should rise up from beneath them and attack, metaphorically speaking.
It came to pass that there first was the issue of a leader among the tribe, and as the population was so large there were many candidates, and so The Reaping Trials were started. Each candidate would be put through 4 trials, wits, strength, dexterity and finally will. Each candidate would then challenge each other candidate starting with a trial of the mind and the losers would be eliminated. The Strength test where each candidate would be challenged to hold the most weight on their shoulders to symbolize the carrying of the weight of the tribe, with the losers being eliminated and removed from the trials. Dexterity where an obstacle course would be set up and the 2-10 fastest candidates would proceed to the final challenge and the rest dismissed. The final challenge was one of the will to live, as you could not properly lead the tribe to survival without the will to survive yourself, each opponent would be placed on one side of a ten sided arena and given a choice of one weapon, then they fought and the winner became the leader.
With the new leader chosen by the people and sorted to the highest standard by the trials the gaze of the entirety of the tribe looked toward revolution and the culling of their oppressive forerunners. The first leader, Cragastamante Coroddostan, led an army of nearly 100,000 across the desert towards Voltania. After 3 months they reached the borders that they remembered only to see the outlying towns burned to the ground and people strewn about like confetti to some horrifying hellish celebration. With the continued march through the desolated landscape soon to be reclaimed by the desert's cold grip they eventually arrived at the Voltanian capital to find it desolated and the attackers finishing off the last battalion of defenders who had been pushed back into the Capital Castle. The defenders held until night and the attackers ceased and a meeting called between Cragastamante and the Barbarian leader, Verxfhez.
An agreement was made following the recounting of how Voltania had treated the exiles for having beliefs differing from their own. The barbarians as it turns out were Voltanian colonists that had banded together to form the Voltanian United Colonies. Together both the Voltanian United Colonies and The Exiles fought Voltania until their last man was slain. The VUC proposed that The Exiles name themselves to be remembered in the scriptures, as they thought themselves to be above their predecessor decided upon Ultimatus and a Massive swathe of Voltania's territory was given to Ultimatus as a gift and reward for defeating their former masters.
With the needs of the tribe met in near completion the only problem following the fall of Voltania and the movement back into their new territory was the pervasive amount of severe light sensitivity that had developed in the populace following their 400 year exile. However with the knowledge they had learned and gathered from exile assisted greatly in building homes in burrows to be expanded into an underground network over the next 27 years. This newly tunneled area became the capital of Ultimatus by the year 1056. The populace naturally migrated about their territory and eventually settled down in very thinly populated areas. This allowed everyone to freely farm and raise their own crops and livestock with relatively few disputes save for the occasional border of livestock dispute as animals were not adapted entirely to living underground.
By 1017 Ultimatus had solidified the underground network using iron reinforced stone structures, something almost unheard of in the rest of the world. With this it was the start of the scientific revolution of Ultimatus that would last nearly 400 years. With great minds in many studies of science Ultimatus managed to advance at an alarming rate toward new and dangerous technologies if misused for their time. One Caravaxyn Yuloi, a renowned metallurgist responsible for many new metal discoveries and the advancement to steel technology and weapons by the year 1257, had recently brought up the question as to what natural resource Ultimatus had in any amount of abundance. He made the note that Ultimatus had only three things in abundance; people, intelligence and sand. In the year 2003 this would become the primary source of building frames vehicle frames and armor both militarily and commercially through the use of the PMCS. The first power source of non-natural origin was created using a strange crystal mined on the east coast mines of Ultimatus to be named Æther. This power source at the time could not be harnessed and so the refined spherical Ætherdrives were stored as they were mined and stockpiled for later use in 2012.
Catalia Vernoxitine, an old lesser known biologist had noted that Ultimatian people were almost as imprisoned underground as they were by their former masters in Voltania. She is responsible for the designing of clothing that would cover the entire body but only had the problem of light hitting the eyes which could result in damage to the eyes. This was remedied by 1264 when through experimentation with the coloring of glass made from the sands and noting that the darker the glass got the easier it was to see above ground as it simulated the darkness they were so used to underground starting a progressive golden industrial age when people were capable of building above ground (and thus creating sunglasses as well as the discovery of how light reflects and dissipates and diffuses through certain matter different from others leading to solar paneling in 1769).
This new invention was revolutionized using gears of differing size to transfer the little power from the paddle wheel into a mush faster or greater amount of power coming out of the secondary gear(s). This was used to power the first work machine made of wood generally due to weight. With the help of these machines making mining apparatuses to drill into the each added a much needed speed boost to the expansion of underground territory adding 2 more layers to towns allowing for the tripling of the population by 1367. As deeper towns were constructed and dug out, new ores such as aluminum were discovered and refined in the in ground forges which allowed much higher temperatures to be achieved as metal smiths wouldn't have to worry about melting through the side of the forge. These high temperatures allowed the smiths to remove more impurities and with the addition of repeatedly folding the metal, as it was relatively low grade as it was in a desert, created almost perfectly pure metals which could be used for multiple applications including providing a lightweight but more durable frame for the mining engines as well a better and lighter protective casing around the steam engines allowing the advancement of technology to proceed smoothly.

Over the next hundred years metallurgists and alchemists tested combined and refined metals in many different ways creating steel and titanium mixtures allowing for incredibly strong supporting structures and eventually managed to create stronger gears to increase the output of the steam engine greatly allowing for somewhat less primitive tanks to be developed but they were entirely inefficient at the time and did very little to increase protection over the wooden man powered design. However with the addition of a steam engine to the man powered design more attack troops could be used inside and less labor troops were needed. this allowed more expansion westward and a stronger defensive military force to boot.
Following after almost three years of westward expansion it seemed as if the desert itself would never end. However in this time it came to pass that a group of Ultimatian Settlers came upon the Kingdom of Capisaria, a letter was sent to the current leader Xiximinix Heliofinix about how to proceed. Xixi was a very conservative leader and an advent believer in allying with anyone that did not raise an army against them in order to preserve the peace and tranquility of the land, he was also the first non-military leader to pass the rights into leadership. With the previous religion of Hexism, a horrid religion requiring sacrifices to the various gods believed in, a religious reform had started three years before and Tershianism was growing strong in the nation. As a devout follower of Tershianism, Xixi sought to do away with the excess and believed in forging alliances to prevent the unnecessary use of violence, as is taught in Tershianist Plains-Houses.
For only 7 days did Xixi have to be called out and 4 of those days were used just to get to the kingdom. In the three days of meeting an alliance was assured for the foreseeable future and both sides agreed to assist the other in any war should aid be called upon. Though no war was currently happening and no war should happen in the foreseeable future. Also, a free border travel agreement and free trade was established only between Ultimatus and Capisaria. The alliance lasted for hundreds of years and has since never dissolved. Only in 1845 did any dispute happen due to land borders and that was simply due to the natural drift of the desert and was resolved with no real argument once it was realized that the desert moving w as part of nature. Since then Ultimatus has been expanding but not with outward expansion increasing territory to be defended but utilizing multi-level terraforming, sounds advanced but its a fancy way of saying Digging, in order to increase the space and territory they could keep without needing to expand outward.
This form of city building became the common standard by the modern times and newer forms are used. Anyone is allowed to begin a digging project as long as they do not leave the boundaries of Ultimatus. Any ore mined in this way was requested to be dropped off in the melting tunnels. Most of the populace does so for the benefit of the country a few keeping for themselves though later realizing there is no black market for it since the black market just sends it to the melting tunnels.
1897 is the year in which Ultimatus decided to solidify it borders and built the Desiccation Wall. The wall was not built to keep people out but actually built to keep the desert sands inside the borders. Ultimatus was praised by neighboring nations for this monumental task because it increased the agricultural wealth of neighboring countries by preventing harsh desert sand from buffeting otherwise healthy and well off farmland. Occasionally other nations will provide donations to help fund improvements for the wall in order to increase nation-nation trade and keep more of the desert sands out of other nations. In addition many trees were planted on the outside of the wall to solidify the soil and provide something nicer to stare at than the light brown sandstone walls. A second wall was added inside of the first one and many trenches dug to help stop the desertification of outside countries.
In 1910 the Voltanian United Colonies launched an assault claiming that the territory Ultimatus had expanded into was their own and a war spanning the length of 103 years. This war led to the advancement of what were considered common war machines to Ultimatus. Many of the country's 3rd generation tanks were developed in the early war years, the second being the steam assisted man powered versions, that utilized steel armor and machine parts for power. No longer requiring foot power crews of much less were required and a new form of weapon was born, the tank. Gun powder at this point was available and Ultimatus had the tools to have formed tank guns but they stood by the 6 and 12 pound canons they had normally had on standby and mounted those on this new weapon that was so easy to produce the only change being made was standardizing the ammunition and lengthening the barrels a bit.
By 1933 the VUC had noticed that not only was Ultimatus largely successful in an otherwise barren and harsh wasteland of sand, but over their years of peace they have managed to advance scientifically at an incredible rate. The VUC only had smaller light machine guns to try and take down the rolling metal beasts that Ultimatus had. Several were able to be destroyed or disabled but the soldiers inside were relatively unharmed because the armor slowed the shot enough. The VUC suffered massive losses of the front lines against the 1st Armored Division of Ultimatus and the troop support brought with it. Though Ultimatus' army was relatively small for the times they were on home ground and had veteran soldiers even at their lowest ranks. The troops were raised on the basis that war was unnecessary but the practice of learning to wage war was a dance to be mastered in order to shove free the possibility of becoming like their ancestors. In order to achieve this they mastered the ways of their ancestors using the historic melee weapons that they once used, this made Ultimatian soldiers deadly in close combat, as well as using the modern day guns and rifles available to them. Ultimatians were a forced to be reckoned with at this time. The VUC had not advanced as fast being largely cut off from the mainland and many technological advancements not reaching them, things like the mortar and anti-tank rifles were largely unknown to them at the time.
Any time a tank would be destroyed on the battlefield it would be taken back to the Forge Tunnels and analysed to figure out where the design failed, though most times it was simply a matter of an overwhelming amount of concentrated LMG gunfire that couldn't entirely be helped except by sloping the armor more, and then improving upon the design near constantly. The rate at which the new Armored division evolved was frighteningly fast with new models being deployed and the others being taken back and refitted almost every week. Of course this rapid development slowed down the success of the war but didn't allow the VUC any ground on the front lines. The VUC made a large mistake in 1938 when they decided to position themselves at a forward point nearby to Ultimatus' Capisarian allies. Ultimatus did not wish to disturb the nearby city so they asked not for help and launched an attack during the night with the full force of over 110 Ultimatian 157th model tanks, the latest design at the time. The VUC were so overwhelmed that the destruction of the forward point was not realized until the base failed to respond to a weekly check in from HQ.
Ultimatus now realized that this war of advancement couldn't go on any longer without risking involving its long time ally Capisaria. Ultimatus decided to allow the war to continue by popular vote among the populace but at a much lower intensity thus slowing down the advancement of military technology and allowing the few Ultimatian losses to be recuperated and training tactics to be reviewed and advanced. Thus beginning a very lengthy cold war lasting almost 100 years. During this time Ultimatus adopted an almost social-communistic approach to their society. No longer would people idly stand by as their country changed around them, a new voting process for laws was put in place and now no matter what every person would have a say in new laws being enacted and the people would have the final say in new laws. The government would also provide jobs to those who currently did not have any varying dependent on the health of the person in question. if they were elderly they would be given jobs that were not physically taxing or too mentally demanding such as research filing or librarian and such.
The military would also no longer draft people and this statement was given at the time of the law "If you wish to lay down and die then so be it, but if you wish to live you will join us and become strong to protect your country in times of need. Glory to the People of Ultimatus." thus making one of the only voluntary military systems in the world. Thus had the result of making the military smaller in comparison to other countries but having troops that were considered Elites even at the lowest ends of training. The city was divided into sections and each section would serve a purpose making the country self-reliant and allowing anybody to do anything they wished. If you wanted to help with scientific advancement then you went to one of the science sectors, want to help grow food so that the country doesn't die off then you went to an agricultural sector and helped sow seeds or harvest (quite relaxing actually because you aren't being told when to start and stop), want to build something from scratch with your hands you went to an industrial sector and made trade goods or things that Ultimatus could use for the betterment of the people. Everything people did would be recorded on their work record and people would be paid, outside of the normal food requests people made each week, in order to compensate people for their hard work at making a better nation. The country would also provide things to the people based on their interests, say you enjoyed research a lot and the government took notice, they may opt to modify your homestead with a small laboratory so that yu were able to work from home in a more comfortable setting if you wanted them too. Or if you enjoyed building things they may opt to allow a home construction site for machined parts or building planning. The government was all for supporting its people.
By the time 1999 rolled around everyone was happy with this new system of governing and the country was more prosperous than ever, then The Phyrexian Empire attacked and a new war began and so the process of adaptation was thought to begin again. Turns out The Phyrexian Empire was even more primitive than their last opponent utilizing swords and toxins, both of which were relatively ineffectual, the toxin however seemed to warp and turn the tanks against Ultimatus so none were deployed any further against the Phyrexian army. Melee troops were called in due to guns turning if coming in contact with the toxin as well. The advanced elite melee fighters of Ultimatus made the Spartans look like a bunch of pansies. Outnumbered approximately 400:1 the Ultimatian melee division went back to using swords and shield but the swords and shield were now much more advanced due to modern technology along with new body armor fitted to their normal VENOMS made them a terrifying close combat force. Using a hole blown in the Desiccation wall they funneled the attacking force into and against their shield wall and cut down 4 branches of their troops before their bodies alone made another attack impossible. The bodies were pushed outside the wall and the wall was roughly reconstructed. The Phyrexians attacked again and the process repeats to the modern day with the advancements in technology continuing to make Phyrexian takeover more and more of an impossibility.
In 2004 refinement of the Ultimatian military begins yet again with an increased focus on vehicle armor and VENOMS armor/modification.
Ultimatus War Information
Ultimatian military spending is listed as two separate entities with the Defense Forces spending being spent on the Armor Divisions (Gaia Branch) and the Law and Order spending being used to fund the man power behind the military. Each Branch has 8 million men at maximum manpower totaling 40 million men which is less than 1% of the national population maximizing troops experience and training and providing better equipment and education to each troop as well as a judgement free and non-sexist environment. Men and women alike are allowed to serve in the military and achieve even the highest ranks without persecution or judgement. The Vanguard Environmental Nullification Occupant Modular Shield or VENOMS is standard for each soldier in the military but will change the external look and various modifications dependent upon the job the soldier has to do. A Fire branch soldier might have an increased amount of bullet armor and night vision visor mode while a Rancor might have a stealth projection coating or Micro Inter-skeletal Limb Enhancers (MILE: A modified version of military exoskeleton specifically designed and refitted for Rancor soldiers in order to increase strength, speed and stamina a small amount and reduce the wear on the individual occupant inside the VENOMS) and a Harmony might have a Heads Up Display of the patient's condition monitor ready at all times on the built in visor and a Gaia may or may not have a direct link to all vehicle AI's depending on the vehicle and position of the soldier.
The human forces are divided into 5 branches: Fire, Gaia, Zephyr, Rancor, Harmony
Fire - The front line fighters whether in an urban environment or in a wet hot jungle. These fighters are the best at navigating the unfettered front lines and great at staying calm and cool to make the best initial decisions while being shelled from miles away. Though they are trained extensively in the navigation and use of cover for the assault based weaponry they have available in the front line combat situations they get themselves in, they are not however trained in the use of vehicles in order to create a tighter knit group of soldiers the soldiers forgo the training in vehicles and are instead accompanied by the Gaia branch who run the vehicles in support of the Fire branch. The troops spend an extensive amount of time in their 5 man Forced Insertion Raid Embargo Teams or F.I.R.E. Teams meaning each member forms a strong bond with their other members allowing them to work more efficiently on the battlefield.
Gaia - As previously mentioned members of this branch are specialized and trained in the various positions and uses of multiple vehicles. They are given of course the basic military training that all recruits get and they know how to use a rifle and sidearm and such but their main focus is to use and drive the vehicles and keep the armor rolling. Mostly the troops will be assigned to a certain vehicle, usually of their own preference, and so the members will be trained in the maintenance and operation of the vehicle until it is almost literally an extension of their own body. These team will then take their vehicle on many test runs in various environmental conditions in order to better prepare them for whatever situation they may be dropped in. Crews are free to customize their vehicle as they wish as long as it doesn't impede effectiveness on the battlefield after 2 years of service. Most vehicles are outfitted with heavy EMP shielding and some are even able to lockdown into amphibious watercraft. If at any point a member is injured an automated AI will take over the functions of that member barring the commander of the vessel which has long since been replaced by radial imaging and GPS systems. The reason for such heavy funing od this branch is to protect this crucial Branch from naval and air assault, most funding go towards experimental devices, weapons and armors for the vehicles and as such there are quite a few prototype vehicles in stock constantly being built and dismantled accordingly based on review of vehicle flaws in order to get the vehicles either closer to production or scrapped and key parts used in other prototypes.
Zephyr - The eyes and ears of the military. This branch cover the intelligence and airborne divisions of the military. These individual sections called Ocular and Locust sub branches respectfully are divided into proportional amounts. The Ocular sub-branch is mainly based around satellite imaging and air wave interception as well as spy operations of/into other countries. Though Ultimatus has a large military budget it has made it quite clear that this is because of their history as a militarily striking nation and as such is an advocate of peace, thus no intelligence operations are done to negatively effect another nation and most times the word spy is often used to refer to an international ambassador that keeps tabs and checks on foreign aid to other countries and generally oversees how the rest of the region is doing.
Rancor - Contrary to the times Ultimatus has a branch of the army dedicated to melee/long range operations any rancor pack contains both dedicated snipers and melee specialists. And one man or woman in the rancor pack with not be without a firearm. usually an Ignis pistol is carried at all times though any sidearm produced in Ultimatus may be carried at all times by every member of the rancor pack. The weapons are design to be as close to mono-filament as possible for the melee fighters and near overly extensive care is taken to make sure the weaponry is balanced no matter the form or shape the specialist has requested. Rancor Forge Masters seem to almost build the weapons like a new religion and many think they believe the weapons that are crafted by them have spirits inside to guide the warriors, some even have AI built in to provide tactical information and companionship as Rancor warriors may have to be in hostile territory hidden for months at a time. As such Rancor warriors are also trained in survival techniques to maintain a healthy status in the wild and are briefed in the use of any and all edible or health maintaining plants in every environment of Meridon. The snipers are made with multi-checked laser precision engineering and built to last in almost any environmental situation and built to be able to handle ultra-long range infantry firing with relatively decent accuracy.
Harmony - The medical branch of the military trained in any and all of the available known medical procedures to save lives and maintain an army with possible medical conditions allowing almost anyone to be able to join the military. That's that. They do carry sidearms but generally don't need them. They are specialized medics. End of story.
