The United Kingdom of Vyrtus is a massive, orderly nation, ruled by The Scarlet Cross Assembly with an iron fist, and remarkable for its barren, inhospitable landscape, avowedly heterosexual populace, and devotion to social welfare. The hard-nosed, cynical, humorless population of 1.257 billion Vyrtusi are kept under strict control by the oppressive government, which measures its success by the nation's GDP and refers to individual citizens as "human resources."
The large, corrupt, moralistic, well-organized government is primarily concerned with Defense, although Industry, Healthcare, and Public Transport are also considered important. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Thireviel. The average income tax rate is 75.2%, and even higher for the wealthy.
The powerhouse Vyrtussian economy, worth 150 trillion Harpes a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. However, for those in the know, there is a large, well-organized, broadly diversified black market in Arms Manufacturing, Information Technology, Uranium Mining, and Automobile Manufacturing. The private sector mostly consists of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, but the government is looking at stamping this out. Average income is an impressive 120,123 Harpes, and evenly distributed, with the richest citizens earning only 2.0 times as much as the poorest.
Maintaining economic growth is no laughing matter, the nation's industries are scrambling to switch to biodegradable plastics, invasive species are hunted by the gendarmerie, and police wait behind troop deployments in order to shoot deserters. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, despite the fact that it is difficult to make it through a day without breaking one of the country's many laws. Vyrtus's national animal is the White Tiger, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its national religion is a major religion.
