Northern Union (Ixnay)

The Northern Union is an alliance in the Ixnay region built upon the founding pillars of economic well-being, mutual defense and political security. The alliance is named after the geographic area in which its founding members are located, the far north or the Ixnay region. The alliance was created as a result of the Northern Conference, held in Suomi.

History

Foundation

Due to the location of the northern nations and the perceived threat from larger nations to the south, the concept of a union between northern states has always existed. Treaties and agreements between the nations of the so-called "Darklands" have been signed throughout the ages covering subjects ranging from royal marriages to trade, to military cooperation. Following the merger into Greater Ixnay and the emergence of nations hostile to the northern nations, it was necessary to create a single overarching treaty which would defend the northern nations from these new enemies, leading to the creation of the Northern Union.

Expansion

The founding nations of the Northern Union, Prizyetsa, Skuldan, Kauvara and Suomi, set the foundations for the future expansion of the alliance by setting basic requirements for nations interested on entry into the Union.

The origins of the Northern Union lie in the common economic interests of the founding member-states, which forms the first and most important pillar of the alliance. In order to further the economic well-being of member-states and partner-states, the Union encourages economic interaction between members, and created the Northern Customs Union Agreement which facilitates free-trade between member-states.

While each of the member nations have retained their basic governments and sovereignty, the Northern Union has developed an overlying structure to help manage and direct the Union as a whole to reflect the combined interest of all of its members without interfering too much with the daily issues which face member-states.

As a large and domineering body within the Ixnayan political landscape, the Northern Union has established a wide variety of relations across the world. This is amplified that the NU member states have collectively become the largest supplier of arms on the globe, much to the ire of some rivals. The Constitutional Empire of Skuldan and the United Federation of Prizyetsa are the main faces of the NU on the global stage, though other member states often have large diplomatic corps of their own.

Relationship with LATA

The Northern Union's relationship with the LATA alliance can be described as rocky at-best due to the stance of some its member-states towards Northern Union nations often labeling them as "rogue states". Most of the LATA nations however coexist and interact peacefully with NU nations without issue., even going as far as being partner-states in the Northern Customs Union Agreement. Efforts have been made on the part of the Northern Union to relieve some of the tensions by offering envoys or joint conferences between the two alliances, though they have all been rejected by Urceopolis, which claims that the Northern Union is a threat to its security and that of the entire LATA alliance. While this is disputed, Urcea maintains this as the reason being policies aimed at blocking trade with some of the Union's member-states, a source of ongoing tension.

Northern Customs Union Agreement

Member states of the Northern Union may choose to enter the Northern Customs Union (NCU) as full members, a treaty which is designed to remove barriers to trade and create a single customs union eliminating tariffs between members. Non NU states can join as partner states, which gives them access to the markets of the NCU with a reduced tariff, making trading with the north more lucrative.
