Runeheim is an illegal region populated by 6 nations.
The broken, suffering populace of Runeheim live under some of the most deranged governments seen this side of the Black Riders. Political freedoms are extended only to close friends and relatives of the leaders of the region's governments, although they can be bought for large piles of cash. But even then, who the hell cares? The economy of the region is very strong, with a large number of very powerful trading powers. Denizens tend to pay their taxes quickly and quietly, with a median tax rate of 23%. The economies of nations in the region tend to be heavily weighted towards producing several ridiculous amenities, such as firewood and the rare material known as "food". Stoking commercial activity is a major priority for governments, accounting for an average of 1% of public expenditure. The remaining 99% goes to large purchases of clean dirt, which is rare in the region.
Denizens of Runeheim are never educated, with literacy hovering around 0%. The region's law enforcement is arguably too well-equipped and overzealous, arresting citizens who dare to commit the most minor of infractions, such as shaking hands or smiling, since they are seen to be revolutionary in nature. Defense is a major priority for governments within the region, with a large chunk of government budgets being devoted to it, protecting it from the most pacifistic region in the universe, at least, in their view. Due to the lack of any Public transport, streets are packed with cars, bikes, and assorted noisy vehicles, if they can afford them, which most people cannot.
The administration departments of Runeheim are all-consuming, soaking up budgets and aid to support supporting a bureaucracy of millions that does almost nothing. With an average of 93% of government budgets being devoted to Administration (Personal Expenses of the Rulers). Hospital patients are instantly killed upon passing through emergency rooms. Welfare in the region is non-existent. Governments in the region are run off of personality cults based around their rulers.
Social inequality is a major problem within Runeheim, and no effort has been made to correct the problem. The environments of the nations in the region are universally appalling, with anything green having died centuries ago.
