The Hinterlands

The Hinterlands is a medium-sized region, with a thriving community of 12 nations.

The straight-backed, broad-smiling populace of The Hinterlands eagerly dismissed concerns of oppression. Political freedoms are extended only to close friends and relatives of the leaders of the region's governments. Economies in the region tend to be stronger than average. The median tax rate of the region is 26%, but is frequently higher for the wealthy. The economies of nations in the region tend to be weighted more towards the public sector, with on average only 44% of the economy comprising the private sector. Commerce is a priority for governments, accounting for an average of 5% of public expenditure.

The Hinterlands does not prioritize education in any meaningful way. Crime is low: the region enjoys well-equipped and well-funded police forces, coupled with efficient but fair judicial systems. Denizens have very well-funded, well equipped defense forces. Due to the lack of any Public transport, streets are packed with cars, bikes, and assorted noisy vehicles.

The administration departments of The Hinterlands are all-consuming, soaking up budgets in aid of supporting a bureaucracy of millions, with an average of 15% of government budgets being devoted to Administration. Some government provision is made for healthcare, but at an average of only 3% the provision for healthcare in the region is paltry. Welfare in the region is minimal, with only a small amount of expenditure being devoted to spending on social security. Spirituality is an obsession of governments in the region, with a relatively very high average of 7% of government budgets being devoted to Spirituality.

Social inequality is rife amongst the nations within The Hinterlands. Natural environments are quite bad, although some measures have been undertaken to ensure that the environment is protected.
