Etymology

"Sainterre" was first used by Admiral Beckett Varisty, after conquering the islands he and Captain Elizabeth White had discovered in 1745. The name, "Sainterre", comes from the French words, for "holy" and "land", "saint" and "terre", respectively.

Before the adoption of the Royal Charter on the Lands of Nation in 1769, Sainterre had many differing names due to the spread out nature of the indigenous people. Such names included, Averoigne, Kolobia and Borderia. However, after the Wars of Independence, the name "Sainterre" was included in the Royal Charter and adopted by the 1st Royal Congress.
