Following the sacking of Sargossa’s corrupt and inefficient Olympic Committee new Sports Minister Domingo Orbina had work to do. He and Ricardo Aranda, the head of the rebuilt and rebranded Olympic Authority of Sargossa, undertook a root and branch overhaul of the nation’s sporting structure. Funding was made available, facilities were built, coaching structures put in place and new domestic competitions created in an effort to chase sporting greatness. And for the first time proper Olympic Trials were held, primarily to select the Athletics and Aquatics squads. It was a youthful looking delegation that made the trip to Emberton and they proved that the investment in sport was starting to pay off.
