Zoe Theodora Helena Anna Maria Christina (17 June 1733 – 15 November 1796) succeeded John VI, as Diadochian Empress in 1762.

Early Life

Archduchess Zoe Theodora, as she was known before her accession to the imperial throne was born in the early hours of the morning of 17 June 1733 at the Atlantis Imperial Palace shortly after her elder brother Archduke Demetrius. Her husband and cousin the Archduke John (future John VI of Diadochia) was the heir presumptive.

Marriage

Zoe II married her first cousin, the future Emperor John VI of Diadochia. The marriage was an unhappy one.

Accession

Zoe II assumed the reins of government following the deposition of her cousin in early 1762. When Zoe came to the throne the country was in a bad state, her predecessors had left the state bankrupt and impoverished, the Imperial Treasury containing only 4,000,000 Solidus. Meanwhile the army, numbering 150,000 was underfunded and poorly equipped, but the Empress could rely on their extraordinary loyalty and devotion to the Empress and the monarchy as a whole.

On 18 December 1762 both Houses of Parliament paid homage to the new Empress at the Atlantis Imperial Palace. In 29 July 1764 Empress Zoe was crowned Queen of Magaria, Illyría, and Moesia. Four years later Empress Zoe was crowned Queen of Sarmatia, Iberia, Aquitania, Thrace, and Dacia in 14 May 1767 at Sofia.

Reforms

Zoe II was very conservative, like many of her forebears. Despite her traditionalist/conservative views Empress Zoe implemented a significant amount of reforms to not only strengthen the Imperial Breaucracy and the Empire's military, but to also bring the nation up to speed with Europe and the west.
