The Oan Defence Services form the military of The Oan Isles. They are responsible for the defence of Oan territory, projection of her power and protection of her allies. They are made up of three branches: the Terrestrial, Maritime and Aerial Defence Services. They are under the authority of the civilian government and within the portfolio of the Member of the National Council for Defence, while the operational head and highest ranking officer is Admiral Tukama Uataka. It is supplied by a combination of local and foreign suppliers. It is headquartered in the capital, La Rochelle, and its operations are coordinated by the Joint Operations Command. The O.D.S. is an entirely volunteer force. The O.D.S. has an operating budget of 50 billion kiribs and employs 150,000 personnel.

Infrastructure

Map of the distribution of military bases of the O.D.S. within Oan territory

The Oan Defence Service branches have bases, stations and academies throughout the country in which they store or deploy equipment, house their troops or train their recruits. They are closed to the public except the Aerial Defence Service Base on Serenity Island, which hosts an air show once a year. The picture on the left shows the location of bases, which house regional headquarters of the branch they belong to. The headquarters of the three branches, the general staff and the joint operations command are housed in a single complex in La Rochelle. The abbreviations on the map are as follows: A.D.S.B is Aerial Defence Service Base, M.D.S.B. is Maritime Defence Service Base and T.D.S.B is Terrestrial Defence Service Base. Many of the bases perform a dual function. The Joint Special Operations Aurora HQ is a tenant at the T.D.S.B. Harmony. The Joint Special Operations Command Gondwana HQ is a tenant at the T.D.S.B. Light. The Joint Special Operations Command Yasteria HQ is a tenant at the T.D.S.B. Redemption.

Uniforms

Admiral Tukama Uataka

The commissioned and non commissioned officers of the Defence Service wear standard and internationally accepted functional uniforms when in combat or on active duty. The dress uniform is quite different. The dress uniform is worn for ceremonial occassions and has elements to represent the following things: the rank of the officer, tribe and branch the officer is from and the monarch at the time. The costume varies immensely. Feathers in the hair represent the highest officers, a cape represents flag or general officers. A symbol on the belt represents the monarch at the time, who is currently Ese Ulua. The patterns and other decoration represent the tribe. The colour of the skirt represents the branch. The picture on the right shows Admiral Tukama Uataka, the highest ranking officet in the armed forces in her ceremonial dress/costume. When a cadet becomes of a full member of the O.D.S. (and even the Oan Police, Emergency Response and Medical services and professions), their tribe holds a large feast and confers them with their basic uniform. Tattoos are temporary and represent rank, monarch, tribe and branch, and are believed to confer protection and good luck. All Oans, however get a permanent tattoo on their back of their choosing when they become adults (full and independent members of the nation), which they display along with their costume.

Terrestrial Defence Service

Manpower and Ranks

The Terrestrial Defence Service employs 70,000 commissioned officers. They are structured according to the following ranks and organised into the following subdivisions:

Component Commanding Officer Number of men

Equipment

The T.D.S. uses the following infantry weapons, produced by the Oan National Arms Corporation:

O.N.A.C. Series III Type I to III Assault Rifle VektorLM5.jpg

The 2nd Armoured Corps of the T.D.S. is responsible for operating the Titanium Shield. This is the Oan national anti aircraft and anti missile defence system. It is built around artillery pieces produced and developed by Oan National Arms Corporation and Oan National Motor Corporation and supported by technology and infrastructure developed and built by the Metatron Corporation. It is distributed throughout The Oan Isles -- from Aurora to Gondwana -- and covers the vast majority of Oan airspace. The following pieces have been disclosed, while most of the information concerning the Titanium shield is secret:

Tactics and Training

The criteria to enter the T.D.S. are high. Only 1 out of 10 candidates is admitted and only 1 out f three candidates completes the 4 year training program. The troops are trained primarily in urban and guerilla warfare, arising from Oan geography. They must be able to inflict maximum damage with limited resources and in tough conditions for a prolonged period of time. Subdivisions are small to make them easier to command, agile and fast. All soldiers are proficient Mixed Martial Artists. Loyalty and an absence of fear are the most valued characteristics in a soldier. The Oan Isles' first line of defence is the navy and air forces. If they fail, the T.D.S. must defend the country. Due the fact that most islands are small, mountainous and covered in jungle, open conventional warfare is not possible. The T.D.S. must rely instead on speed agility and precision instead of brute force. This is why the infantry is issued with a light assault rifle, the squad is centred around the machine gun and the armoured car is the primary armoured unit instead of the tank. The Oan Isles uses the heavy main battle tank to cause unilateral damage once the infantry and light armour units have broken through to the core of the invasion force.

Divisions

There are 12 active divisions: 9 infantry divisions and 3 armoured divisions. 2 infantry divisions are focused on "sniper" combat, and 1 armoured division is responsible for operating the Titanium shield.
