As of September 2017 only two candidates have announced his or her nomination for the election; Centre Party candidate and current President Sandalio Joaquín Espina announced his intentions to run for a second term and final term in June 2017. And in August 2017, New Democratic Party candidate and current President of the National Congress and Senate María Castellano announced her being chosen by the party to be it's candidate to the election. If she wins the election overall, she will be the first woman to be elected into the position of President.
