Alterrum, officially the Federation of Alterrum, is an island country located in northern Canada. The country has a population of 8,623,713 and a total area of 526,830 square kilometers. The capital and largest city is Kiroesatta. Around 70% of Alterrum lies above the Arctic Circle, and most of the country has a subarctic climate. It is a mountainous country with a long mountain range spanning the northeastern shoreline, and is rich in forests in the south.
Alterrum is a federation of 24 states. The region has been historically decentralized - a unified state did not exist before the foundation of the federation in 1832, which at the time began as a trade union. Many governmental functions have remained under the control of states and local municipalities, where direct citizen involvement is quite common, so Alterrum can also be described as a semi-direct democracy. Since its inception in the 19th century, the federation has avoided military conflicts with other nations, and follows a policy of neutrality.
Until the 20th century, Alterrum had a relatively small population, averaging around one million citizens, with its economy relying largely upon fishing and mining. However, the population saw a rapid increase after Alterrum liberalized its immigration laws in the 1920s. Since then, immigration has been a large contributor to Alterrum's population growth and cultural development. Introducing large-scale industrialisation programs and social and labor-market reforms at the same time provided the basis for the present welfare state with a highly developed economy.
Today, Alterrum has a market-socialist economy, characterized by high social mobility and a high standard of living. Efforts have been made to democratize businesses - for example, workers in large corporations vote for their company's board. Alterrum ranks high in political and economic stability, and has largely been unaffected by the late financial crisis. Equality of all sorts is traditionally highly valued in Alterrum, but due to market-based reforms implemented in the 1990s, income inequality has been steadily increasing.
